Following as it does on Which Art in Hope, though, ... well ... that was a tough act to follow, plain and simple. The latter two of this trilogy are still quite good, but don't quite 'catch lightning in a bottle' the way the first one did. For my money, the exploration and development of a really profound idea that turns your world upside-down is the soul of a good book -- especially in sci-fi -- and while the latter two do contain some interesting notions and commentary, they really can't touch that first one for depth. These two were fun to read, but I didn't really feel that they asked me to 'grow.'
But then, as I said in my review of the first book, Which Art in Hope is (IMHO) probably his best book, at least that I have read. It would be pretty tough to top that. Still great and entertaining reading though!
I'm betting on Althea, but you'll have to read the Saga starting with Which Art in Hope to see if I win my bet.
I like what Porretto says in his author's notes where he describes his books as "science-fiction-for-readers-who-detest-science-fiction."
Perfect description of his books.
