Years after it's release, Freelancer remains a popular multiplayer platform with 600+ daily players from around the world. The most popular community modification to Freelancer is called Discovery, which adds dozens of new systems, ships, factions, and functionality to the game engine.

Play as police or military for your favorite house, or be that truly evil character you could never been in the single player module. Fly previously locked ships such as tranports, gunboats, cruisers, and battleships.

Simply purchase a copy of Freelancer then use your favorite search engine to search for "Discovery PTC" to get more information about the Discovery mod, and one of the most popular Discovery multiplayer servers, Discovery PTC.

We look forward to seeing you in game!

I played and finished this game when it came out a number of years ago. I really liked it then. Only one of its kind. Since then, I gave it away and went on to other things. I recenlty bought it again for the same reason. AS far as I can tell, it's the only one of its kind. The only thing out there that's close is EVEonline, which is a MMO. But even that, I'm not quite as happy w/ as this. The two main reasons, this has no monthly fee to play, and fighting is in realtime. I'm not totally crazy about the game b/c it does get pretty redundant. Also, I would've liked to have had more things to do at the various bases, and have more things to do w/ my money besides buy bigger ships and more weapons. I think if they could ever work on those areas and make a Freelancer2, it would be a fantastic game. Some things I do like about it: Pretty easy learning curve, lots of systems to explore, little hidden things here and there in the systems that make it fun to fly around and see what I can find. I'm hoping someday someone will make the game w/ all the components I want in it.

I originally purchased a copy of this game...I think it was back in 2003. I was looking to add to my Wing Commander experience with Chris Roberts, my all time favorite game producer(first with Origin and then with Digital Anvil) so I purchased Freelancer and Starlancer. For us old time Wing Commander guys its hard to mention freelancer without talking about Wing Commander Privateer and its sequel Righteous fire, however, freelancer with its upgrade in graphics, smooth transition videos, long single player mode and flexibility of online server play with a wide range of fan based ship and server modding was more then just a new Privateer. This game was a whole new Universe carved out by the Master and his fan minions. This copy of Freelancer is going to my Grandson in hopes that it sparks the same enthusiasm for building computers and gaming that has been my fallback since the late 80s(Wing Commander)...a shelter from the mundane. The graphics are still good quality, game play and video transitions are flawless, although, you will have to find a passable playing resolution for wide screen monitors. The system requirements are so low that even most economy computers can play this game using a windows environment. My Grandson's computer is overkill with an i3 sandy bridge at 3.3 ghz, ati radeon 4850 and 8 gig of memory, this game would play the same on my old AMD K-6 with an Nvidia 5700LE, windows ME and 512 meg of memory. This Item arrived in a reasonable amount of time and was adequately packaged without shipping damage and comes in a jewel case which is better than the original packaging.

When I was a kid one of my favorite games was Wing Commander: Privateer. It was the best of the Wing Commander series and I played it several times over until it no longer worked on whatever computer I owned, but I haven't been able to find a game since to replace it. Until now.

Freelancer it a great space adventure game without all the muck of being a flight simulator, which I am not very fond of. The only reason I didn't give the game five stars is because it has some long cut scenes of you attacking bases on foot, but doesn't actually let you go into FPS mode to fight the bad guys yourself.

That aside, I love this game.

You rarely notice the age lines and wrinkles in a good friend. In that sense "Freelancer" is a good friend. Yes, it feels a lot like Bard's Tale in space (without the snarky narrator) yet it continues to be a genuine time-waster. The game play is straightforward and the adventure not exceptionally variable, but the universe provides more than enough to discover.

Many add-on modifications are available (for free "as in beer") on the web and greatly enhance the fun of single-player mode. That's a good thing since it's getting hard to find multi-player servers available.

It's not the space game I've always wanted, but it's not suddenly deadly PVP (like Eve) either, and it's easily the best $10 I've purchased in a long time.

I've played through the game twice, and then another 3 or 4 times with different 3rd party mods. I truly enjoy the game play, can play for hours and not get tired of it. And the online play opens it up even more!

Some Pros to consider:
Fully customizable; you can get a huge assortment of ships and weapons, there are even weapons not part of the game play that are rare and powerful!
You don't have to make money legally. You can pirate off of the infinite supply of NPC ships.
You can make money from cargo, or from fighting/missions.
Online play is great and allows for some fun times.
Combat is intuitive and easy to learn.

A few cons:
Unlike what the adds say, you CANNOT be EITHER good or evil! You can do evil things, and have people hate you, but the main story line is based only in the good.
There are some situations and items that one would have to "cheat" to know exist, such as the type 10 weapons.

Overall i do love to play, online and off. The single player takes over a day of in game time, and that's if you rush it, knowing what to do, where to go, and how to get there.
