A lot of how-to books feel like the thin end of a wedge sliding into my wallet. This book feels like mentoring. No hype, no nonsense. Just an experienced, intelligent, very successful writer sharing her hard-earned insights (and those of her successful author-husband Dean Wesley Smith) in clear, straightforward chapters.
1. Know What you Want.
3. Be Prepared to Walk Away. This was a crucial part for me. I was and this was key.
4. Stay calm.
5. Never reveal your entire hand.
6. Don't flip-flop.
You could buy this book for just the contracting chapters alone and it would be worth your money. You could reread them and have Kris on your shoulder, especially if you are an author. And, then you would have the rest of the book!
If you sign contracts, if you work for yourself, if you are a freelancer, and if you are a writer/author and you want to *make* money from your writing, buy this book. Do not delay.
Whether you're just starting out, or are an established freelance writer, this book is a must have.
The main reason is this book covers the most important part of freelance writing... the business part.
From negotiation, to networking, to business planning... this book covers it all in great depth. I haven't found such a comprehensive resource yet that covers the freelance writing business in so much depth.
And, no fluff either... it's all meat.
Highly recommended... and worth every dollar.
I keep telling my writing workshop group about what I learn from Kris to help them with their writing as businesspeople.
I'm so glad the Guide is here now. I heard about it a year ago, went to read Kris's blog, and decided that asap I'd buy the Guide. I am seriously considering it as my first ever ebook purchase as well.
