EDIT: 1 year update. This unit is amazing, no problems out of it what so ever with a years worth of use. My 3-year-old even uses it when it gets cold downstairs.
Wow...I can't believe how great this is....Looks fantastic in my fireplace, we use it everyday, morning and night, in my opinion very realistic looking and the heat that comes from it is nice too! Remote allows you to control the volume of heat/temperature coming out and the size/color of the fire.
I inserted into my true fire place. I had to quit using it due to cracked flies. It would of cost a fortune to have fireplace repaired, but sure missed having a fire burning! So we just slipped this in and installed it. So now I can have my fireplace back minus all the work!
I have a small (28-ish") firebox, and the unit fits in nicely. I have it sitting on the iron log holder that was in the fireplace, and there is about 4 inch clearance on the top of the unit, so there is plenty of space for the air intake. With my firescreen in place, it really does look like a real fire, and not cheesy at all. It is so nice to have "instant" fire at the push of a remote. I have a small house, (650 sq ft), and with the unit on, and set at 75 degrees, the house furnace rarely comes on once the fireplace has been running for a bit. (Not to say it heats my whole house to 75 degrees, but it is comfortable...especially the living room).
You can hear the fan for the heater, not terribly loud, but not super quiet. I could do without the loud beeping when you change temps or modes....I'm not sure why this is necessary, but if you're not constantly adjusting things, this isn't a problem. I do wish the electrical cord was longer. It's only about 4 ft, but then has to stretch out the firebox, and around the fireplace, and over to the outlet.
I've only had the unit about a month, and use it almost every night. I haven't seen my electric bill yet, so don't know what effect the heater has had on my bill. I'm sure it won't be enough to decrease my love of this product.
