5.0 out of 5 stars Great filters (and an awesome value)--but a few caveats with long exposures from a drone.
By S. Pablo on October 29, 2018
I am a heavy user of ND filters for my photography--but always on a tripod planted securely on the ground. I knew ND filters existed for drones, but typically weaker strength intended for video--but not really for long exposure images. For a drone--I never thought that a lens connected to several motors, floating in the sky would be stable enough for the slow shutter images I normally take with my typical cameras. Turns out I was sort of wrong--and the results of getting slow shutter images from a new perspective opens up a whole new slew of imagery!

Now keeping in mind that the ND filters that I have for my cameras typically run over a hundred dollar for each one. To be able to an 11-stop one for $20--I honestly was not expecting too much. I have purchased cheap ND filters before and was greeted with soft images, inconsistent sharpness across the entire image (as we approach the edges), and really bad build quality. Thankfully the Freewell filters do not exhibit any of those. The build quality is nice, machined from aluminum and the optics are multi-coated which is what digital photographers really should be using. The filters appear perfectly flat--and the post cuts are accurate--which allow you (once you get used to it) to install and remove the filters.

ND filters tend to have a color cast (though my really expensive ones try to minimize that). The Freewell long exposure set are no exception. They seem to accentuate the typically warmer tendency of the Mavic 2 Pro images. As we creep up in the ND strength, towards the ND1000 or ND2000, the Freewells definitely have a warmer yellow cast to them. A little bummed that they do have a some color cast, especially since I got used to my premium filters, but glad it can be easily corrected--especially if you photograph in RAW.

Another thing that I’m not too fond of--the case. Since the filters are sort of placed on the surface of a foam insert within a tin case, the case does not open smoothly, a sudden slightly forceful opening might make all the filters fall out. If the foam had cut outs in it that could house the filters--that would be better. OR...do away with the case, sell it as a separate item, and make an even better case available separately that can also contain several filters. Seems like a waste of space to house a bunch of filters in different shaped cases.

One more thing I found--and this is due to a comparison with my tripod-bound ND filters--is that the Freewell long exposure seem to be slightly weaker than what I’m used to. Since I also bought the long exposure range--from 7-stops all the way to 11-stops, I will treat them as a 5/6-stop to 9/10-stop filter set. That’s fine--as you’ll find in the next paragraph, the darker filters lead to a more difficult time to get a sharper image--all due to the ND filters, not due to the quality of the filters.

Now onto the actual use of long exposure ND filters. While optically, they seem great and I have been surprised at how still a drone’s gimbal can get while it’s floating--it is still at the mercy of how windy it is. In trying out the filters--while the Mavic 2 Pro was in Aperture priority mode, the camera seemed to max out at 1 second. Using the 7, 8, and 9 stop ND filters don’t seem to illustrate the issue on a bright sunny day, since they can all execute an image in less than a second. I knew it would be too difficult to ask a drone to do a 20+ second exposure (like I normally would with my tripod shots), but as soon as I crept above 1 second, I noticed that it was very easy to get blurry shots. My success rate was at about half. Not a fault of the ND filters, but more on the expectation of long exposures on a floating object. A gentle breeze is enough. So be sure to take multiple shots to play the odds of getting a sharper image.

To do a test on the strength of the stronger filters, I actually found a way to mount the drone straight onto a tripod--removing camera shake from the equation, allowing me to see how consistent the filter is across the glass. The output was consistent--uniform sharpness, and like I mentioned before--a very warm color cast, which was correctable in photo editing.

I hope this helps folks who are in the market for filters for a drone for photography. There are caveats for slow shutter exposures with a drone, but once you understand what they are and can photograph in an environment that works--you should seriously consider these filters. They are a great value and built well. Long exposures from the sky have some issues--thankfully these filters don’t contribute any additional issues. I highly recommend these.

Note on the images: they are lightly edited to match exposures. The 11-stop ND filter was done in manual mode (as opposed to the aperture priority mode) since I needed more than 1 second for the exposure.

5.0 out of 5 stars Works great, great value
By Hdfan on April 23, 2019
I have found to love this filter. I used to get annoyed with the light pollution in my night photos, but this really does help. It fits great and the hard case it came with is tough. Would definitely buy again if I lost this one!

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing quality of ND filters
By Oscar on June 13, 2020
I have been looking for a good set of ND filters to take long exposure pictures with my Mavic 2 Pro. I ran into this name brand, and I have given it a try. On my first pictures with a few manual settings, I was able to get long exposure pictures. I do own other drones that I will start using Freewell ND filters for them.

1.0 out of 5 stars DOES NOT FIT MAVIC 2 PRO
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 28, 2018
I took a gamble ordering this for my new M2P and am very disappointed as it simply does not fit the drone!
The plastic clips go nowhere near the places they need to be to clip over the camera lens - I honestly have no idea what this is made for but it is NOT the Mavic 2 Pro :/
Sending it back an hour after receiving it - total waste of my time!
