Richard Abel is Professor Emeritus of International Cinema and Media at the University of Michigan. He gained a PhD in Comparative Literature from the University of Southern California, taught at Drake University for 30 years, became Robert Altman Collegiate Professor in Film and Video Studies at the University of Michigan in 2002, and went on "permanent extended leave" (retired) in 2013. The Society for Cinema and Media Studies honored him with its 2014 Distinguished Career Achievement Award, and the Giornate del cinema muto (Pordenone) gave him the annual 2017 Jean Mitry Award.
