Editorial Reviews

Two CD live compilation of their 1994 three night residency in Paris with the full five member line-up. It started with a dusty box of DAT tapes. Perhaps it was years since anyone had listened to them despite the tantalizing labels: "Paris #1," "Paris #2," "Paris #3... Indeed it was Paris where the Dots played their first residency in 1992. However, these tapes were a document of the Dots' one and only three-night'er from the 10th to the 12th of March 1994 at the delightful Theatre Passage du Nord Ouest. For this special occasion, hours of material were prepared and delivered in the certainty that quite possibly the same 300 or so people would turn up each night. Backing up that theory was the traditional shout of "champignons" from a mystery member of the audience on each of those nights. That clarion call actually began in Montreal a few years earlier, and the band STILL hear it whenever they play in that city. It was ambitious. Sometimes the band was a little shaky but songs were played that were never heard again on a stage.

This is a wonderful live album... not since "The Lovers" have the Dots put out a live recording so crisp, so pure, so true... and some of the songs on here truly surprised me! Not only is the setlist surprising but the approaches to the songs are very performance oriented: after all, this is when the Pink Dots seemed to temporarily set aside their keyboards and have crashing live cymbals, guitar, bass, and horn horn horn. Psychedelic, tinged with their gothic excellence but really more inclined to just being witty and vigorous--this one is a romp. Do yourself the honor of buying this album, because it is versatile. Some Dots Albums are only for night time, some are for day. This one works on a midday summer road trip as well as when you are idling along some icy November night, holding back very bitter tears.

i saw the pink dots last thursday 10/21 and picked this up at the merchandise table. it is a 2 disc set of some live recordings from france in 1994. they are dat recordings and the sound quality is extraordinary. i'm not going to list all 22 songs, but some of them are: crack in melancholy time, fifteen flies in the marmalade, premonition 13, love in a plain brown envelope, space captain and crushed velvet to name a few. they have a full band line up: silverman, niels van hoorn, martijn de kleer, ryan moore, raymond steeg and ka-spel. the cd artwork is fantastic and is designed by jesse peper (check out his website sometime, very lovecraftian). all in all, one of the better live recordings by the dots. highly recommended.

Certainly the best live album and likely one of their best albums.. and I have many, if not most, to compare it to. A very intimate, powerful performance that captures the live experience perfectly with arguably their best lineup to date. The mid 90's were a great period for the Dots and they perform a wide range of material on this record spanning the width of their career. Great for newcomers and veterans- it has reinvigorated my love of their work. Get it while you may.
