Personally as a fan of food writing in general, I was hoping a memoir by a chef would be more food-centric. Instead it's much more hip-hop and sports. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but I don't particularly care about those topics so they were boring for me.
In contrast to the TV show, the book makes it clear that his father was not a mild mannered goofy guy as shown in the TV show but a semi-serious gangster in Taiwan. He beat Eddie and his siblings and Eddie was a troublemaker in his own right, fighting with his brothers and dealing drugs as an adult. I understand why it was edited out for TV, but it's still eye opening to see a description of Asian Americans not conforming to the model minority. Huang has some provocative ideas during his time in college and law school, labeling Asians who fit the model minority mold Uncle Chans instead of Uncle Toms. That idea alone is an explosive one and Huang holds nothing back in arguing that the model minority is a myth and a trap.
Overall this was a very funny and interesting read. Well worth buying.
