Style Name: 1/2-Inch Diameter 2-Flute Down Spiral Router Bit with 1/2-Inch Shank
This review is for upward spiral bits, but the same information applies for a downward spiral bit. Downward spiral bits are designed especially for work where you want to go completely through the material.
This review is going to sound funny from someone who broke two 1/4" shaft 1/4" upward spiral bits. In plain words, I wouldn't be without them. As a matter of fact I am adding a 3/8" to my 1/4" and 1/2" bits. When people use the phrase the "break in period" take that literally when you use spiral bits. The problem is that it is not designed for freehand use. If you plunge it deep and try to freehand it into some wood, the edges can grab and instantly create a ricocheting effect, which will whip into an instant frenzy and snap the bit. These bits are designed to be used in a table, with a fence guiding the work against the bit, or in a jig to make mortises for example. They are ideal for use with a plunge router with a three step adjustable turret. Also great with a regular hand held, with successive depth adjustments. Fully burying the bit and going for it is not advisable even in a table.
Another consideration is although these bits are solid carbide, I doubt they are the same grade in hardness of the standard double flute straight bits with welded on tips, that are so popular. So they shouldn't last as long.
So after all of that, why buy an upward spiral bit? Simply this: If your creating a pocket, like a mortise, even though you are doing it in successively deeper passes, it will create a perfectly smooth surface, both on the walls, and the bottom of the pocket. If you are creating an opening all the way through your work piece, it will create a perfectly smooth wall.

This may be one of the best router bits I have ever used. The dimensions are spot on and the cut quality is excellent. I'm currently using it to cut rabbets for shelves in Baltic birch plywood. So far I've cut at least 300 lineal feet and still perfect. Would buy this product again.

I needed a "down" bit for a project I was working on to modify some existing kitchen cabinet doors. Unfortunately, I failed to observe some "staples" that were holding the doors together. So, when I used the bit to dado the doors, I hit the staples and severely damaged the bit. I didn't tell anyone but you so no one will know that I did what I did. It still routes okay, just the lower edges are chipped off. I was doing a "stopped" dado so it was hard to "clear" the chips. Better to go slower and vacuum or blow off the chips if you are doing this.

Most experienced woodworkers suggest an upcut spiral but for plunging mortises. However, for my particular need, I wanted to avoid the typical tear out that often occurs when using an up cut style bit. Sure they remove the sawdust better while the blade is cutting but they do have a tendency to cause tear out around the mortise opening if you're using a plunge router for the job. I thought long and hard and decided that for my needs building a child's wagon for my granddaughter, that the down spiral would be better. It worked like a charm. I only take one star off because it does cost 2-3 times more than a straight double flute bit. Otherwise it's a solid additional to my router bit collection.

I am a professional electrician that does woodworking as a hobby and leisure activity. I own and use many Freud bits and have never had a problem with any of them. Highest quality for the money. I also own and use many other cheap bits since you can buy a whole set for a lot less then two name brand. The bits I use the most though typically are Freud, Amana, CMT, and Bosch. Keep the pitch cleaned off and they last a long time. The cheap ones tend to start dulling whether clean or not and I don't think its worth having them sharpened for the money. This down cut I bought to use on the edges of plywood to keep a clean edge on the top underneath the router.

I have abused this bit in a palm router for a few weeks now... cutting laminate flooring non stop... the bit just keeps going and going, ripping through the laminate like it was made of pine. I was expecting this bit to fail after a few rooms worth of cutting, but the quality has impressed me. I am not a serious woodworker... but this is the brand of router bids I will seek out from now on. For the light fooling-around-with-wood-projects that I do... they should last me forever.

I use this bit mostly for cutting out parts in 3/4" material thanks to its deep cut length. Nice for cutting veneer and for leaving a clean edge on top of materials. Cut and gouges plywood very nicely.

I had this bit in the original packaging for a few months in my bit draw and when I decided to use it I mounted it in my router turned on the router and the bit broke. I think it must have had a flaw. I have tried to contact Freud twice and have not received any response. So much for customer .service.
