About the Author

Pablo Ortiz Monasterio" was born in Mexico in 1952. He is best known for his gritty photographs of impoverished Mexico City youths--downtrodden, but never beaten. His work was recently featured at Santa Monica's Rose Gallery.

Frida Kahlo lived fewer than 50 years, but hers was an intensely examined life, and one that enthusiasts all over the world are still poring over. As a child in the suburbs of Mexico City, Kahlo, born in 1907, survived polio. As a teenager already enrolled in premedical studies, her body was brought forcefully to her attention again by a bus accident whose physical repercussions would shape the rest of her days, crucially inform her artwork and eventually kill her. Kahlo was already a painter when she married the political muralist Diego Rivera at 22, a volatile pairing that survived much unrest and one divorce and remarriage. She had her first solo exhibition in 1938, at New Yorkis Julien Levy Gallery, and saw some growth in her career before her death in 1954, but nothing like the steady, exponential increase of interest and respect that has continued since. Exhibits, books and reproductions abound, and 2002 saw the release of a high-profile feature film about her life starring Salma Hayek.

Seems like hundreds of pictures, almost all are interesting and historically meaningful. I felt like I got into Kahlo's basement, stumbled on a box of old photos, and made off with it. It seems more like a stack of family photos than professional shots until you get into it and find photos by Madotti, Weston, Man Ray and the like. And the photos themselves include eeverything from family snapshots, to Christmas cards, to formal pictures of statesmen. From pictures of Madotti and Weston to Trotsky, to Rivera and Kahlo (of course), to the unknown (including a murdered striker). Read a biography of Frida Kahlo and most of the characters will be found in photos in this book. It's well worth the trip if you like photography, history (of that time), Kahlo/Rivera, and art.

This is a gorgeous book.

The publisher used the best, thickest paper; it is luxuriant and heavy (this is one HEAVY book) and offers the best possibility for viewing Frida Kahlo's wealth of a photographic collection.

And yet, for the size and scope, and I realize that the impossibility of what one actually wants and what was there available to make the book possible are two different things, I waas expecting... more Frida!

A very good side effect is the reproduction of the verso of many of the photos, where Kahlo has annotated them, often adding interesting tidbits of information.

If like me, you are a Fridaphile, then buy this book.

The photographs in this high quality book give new insight into Frida Kahlo's life and times. Black and white, sepia and gray photographs abound. We see Frida, her family, her friends, the home she loved, the places she visited and animals she adored. It's truly wonderful book. Highly recommended.

I wished that the book would have had more photographs of Frida Kahlo throughout her life. Other than that, it was fine.
