REMEMBER, price has a lot to do with a lower dB rating too. This unit meets my dB requirements, even though Friedrich does not list them. Watch the video for my analysis.
Energy efficiency only gets 4-stars because I have not gone through a billing cycle for my next electric bill. Will follow up on this later.
1 star for their customer support in the warranty period. In a perfect world every single AC would work great, but things do fail and that's where the warranty comes in. But Freidrich makes it so painful and long:
Step 1: Have a licensed Friedrich installer inspect and determine the issue (this you pay out of your pocket, not cheap)
Step 2: Send report of defect to Friedrich to determine next steps
Step 3: Wait, follow up, wait, follow up... it's been 4 weeks in processing. Not sure why it takes that long to get me a replacement for a clearly broken AC unit.
.. the price of this one seems a little high.. but assembling it together was not so hard if you know how to use a screwdriver, and putting it in the window, setting it up, was about an hour job.. It is, IMHO, quietest air condition I've ever owned for this amount of BTUs cooling . Up two and a half rooms at bottom floor during one of the hottest summers in northern New Jersey in years.. love the dehumidifier feature plus the option to get inside or outside air.. don't waste your money on lesser Brands This is the real deal
I can say this after 4 months 24 /7 Use
Bought a full price "New" unit. The fan hits the internal styrofoam and makes an awful "Wham!-wham-wham!" sound. Posted a video of the noise, my review was then refused publication. Ordered a replacement for one last try.
3rd ac arrived, it works great! And is very quiet too. The box looked used. I can see inside where the fan used to hit the Styrofoam. This leads me to believe Friedrich is refurbishing their faulty units OR running them until the internal styrofoam wears out from the fan hitting it, then reselling them as "New."
Over all, a really unpleasant and arduous experience. In the end, a great ac...
I have a 6K BTU air conditioner from Friedrich and have no complaints about that one.
On to the real review. It's a nice unit, cools ice cold and has a lower noise level for window/through wall AC than I have experienced with other brands. The occilating vent works well distributing a breeze around the room. The feature of using the evaporative liquid to cool the coils (why it has a higher seer rating) means that it virtually never has the dreaded outdoor drip, and this is in the humid Florida Keys.
Even with the problems, I think it's a great unit and based on the manufacturers support, I would buy again.

I'm a noob at a/c and ordered this to be delivered to B.C. from Ontario and the first one arrived badly damaged. Fortunately early enough in the season to get a replacement, but when I asked Amazon to have it shipped by an alternate method than UPS (they suck to Kelowna, BC), they said they could not do that. They couldn't even send it through the mail. Fortunately the new one arrived in one piece.
Being new at the a/c game, I was unpleasantly surprised this unit does not have fresh air venting on the fan setting. It is a premium priced product, so you would expect this feature. Now I need a fan in my second window in addition to this a/c unit, not quite the setup that I wanted. It's now getting hot so I didn't want to return this again.
Also, for most people, as I found out, read the install instructions - then use your imagination as to how this fits into your own window. The instructions are for how to install in only one type of window, no hints included for vinyl windows or other types, you will just have to figure this out for yourself. Friedrich should have provided instructions for various types of windows. As such, a simple install took me the whole day to do, cutting shims, modifying and trial fitting over and over again until I got it basically right.
So in summary, the unit works good, seems well built, is somewhat more quiet compared to others, but loses the 5th star due to no fresh air venting and inadequate instructions.
They're being installed now, so I can't say anything on the quality of the product.
I can however say the unit was dented, but the box showed no sign of damage, so it was dented before it was put in the box.
Edit: Quality's great - installer even said "I wish everyone got these".
