About the Author

H. L. Mencken (1880-1956) was an American journalist and author. Skilled in satire, he was famous for the pungent criticism he aimed at all complacent attitudes and for his vigorous attacks on the shams and stuffiness of his day. Among his works are Ventures into Verse, Treatise on the Gods, and his autobiography Happy Days.

Richard Flathman is George Armstrong Kelly Professor of Political Science at Johns Hopkins University. His books include The Philosophy and Politics of Freedom, The Practice of Political Authority, and Toward a Liberalism.

This was the first book I read on or by Nietzsche. It did provide a good introduction to some of Nietzsche's ideas, but is very outdated and mediocre. Mencken is a racist, as evidenced by many of his comments, and tries to present himself as an expert, when he is far from it. Instead, check out Walter Kaufman's analyses of Nietzsche.
