Purchase options and add-ons
A 2020 Schneider Family Honor Book
A heartwarming picture book that explores the experience of autism and the power of friendship.
In Classroom Six, second left down the hall, Henry has been on the lookout for a friend. A friend who shares. A friend who listens. Maybe even a friend who likes things to stay the same and all in order, as Henry does. But on a day full of too close and too loud, when nothing seems to go right, will Henry ever find a friend—or will a friend find him? With insight and warmth, this heartfelt story from the perspective of a boy on the autism spectrum celebrates the everyday magic of friendship.
BACK TO SCHOOL: Familiar school scenarios—from new schedules to making new friends—are portrayed with humor and understanding in this sweet picture book that will appeal to and reassure any child starting or continuing in school.
DIVERSE STORIES: Representing neurodivergent kids is a vital aspect of expanding diverse representation across books for all ages. A Friend for Henry provides a mirror and a window for kids on the autism spectrum and their friends to see themselves in the stories they read.
AN AWARD-WINNING TEAM AND A BELOVED CHARACTER: Jenn Bailey and Mika Song were awarded a Schneider Family Honor Award for A Friend for Henry. Now, fans of this award-winning picture book can grow along with Henry! Henry’s story continues in Henry, Like Always, the first book in an early reader series based on the same character.

About the authors

Mika Song loves stories about sweetly funny outsiders. She grew up in Manila, Philippines and Honolulu, Hawaii before moving to New York to study at Pratt Institute. Her work has received a Schneider Family Award Honor.

Jenn Bailey has visited all 50 states and most of the world’s oceans but not nearly enough countries. Although she started life in Warwick, Rhode Island, her wandering feet have landed her in a bunch of other places. Currently, she writes from her home in Kansas City where she happily eats BBQ with her husband, three sons (although one has now launched), and numerous cats and dogs. Jenn works as an author, editor, workshop presenter, and speaker. She graduated from the Vermont College of Fine Arts with her MFA in Writing for Children and Young Adults in 2017. Jenn writes picture books, short stories, and novels, all for children.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 27, 2019Henry would like to make a friend in his new classroom six. But Vivianne was a kaleidoscope a tangle of colors, with ribbons and clackety shoes. Samuel was a thunderstorm, booming and crashing, kind of scary if you didn't have your blanket. There are problems and misunderstandings as Henry tries to fit in, but he finds a friend in calm Katie. A sweet story of a neurodivergent boy finding quiet friendship in a noisy world. Spare text and beautiful roomy illustrations that are just right, like the friendship Henry finds. Wonderful to read over and over.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 22, 2023I saw this book online one day when I was shopping, and after looking at it, I decided to buy it, and it made me think about me trying to make a friend in school just like Henry did, and like Henry, I too, have Autism and Asperger's Syndrome, and so, I hope that whoever I give this book to will be able to understand how hard it was to make a friend, especially when you have Autism, Asperger's, or any other kind of disability, whether it is physical or mental these days.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 8, 2022The book is fantastic and realistic! 100% recommended in that aspect. However it arrived with some glue or something like that sticking a few pages together. It ripped a bit but not enough to ruin the words or whole pages. Still readable. Just be aware. The book itself was so cute!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 7, 2024my students love this book!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 5, 2019Henry goes to school wondering if he'll find a friend. The kids don't seem to be quite the same as him. One girl displays her fingernail polish and he thinks paint should be washed off fingernails. When he paints her shoes the same colors thinking that will please her, well, it doesn't go over too well. He carefully arranges carpet squares for story time, but another kid pulls out one to sit on and disrupts the pattern. He sees kids doing other things that he wouldn't do. He ends up watching the goldfish and a girl watches it too. They talk. She likes the big slide and he doesn't, but they both like to play blocks. They learn to accept each other's preferences and become friends. This is for the younger kids, Preschool to First grade, perhaps. If your child is nervous about going to school the first time, or isn't sure how to fit in, this might help. If your child is on the autism spectrum, this might help pave the way and prepare them for kids who act differently from them and maybe are a bit chaotic. The pictures are simple and clearly show happy and unhappy expressions, and we see school as Henry see it, sometimes bewildering. But it ends on a hopeful note.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 16, 2021Thank you for this gorgeous book that allows us to experience what a child with autism might think and feel. I could feel how much Henry wanted to have a friend even though his actions were misunderstood by his peers. Having worked for years with kids with autism, I see that same heart of longing for a friend. We read this book many times. It's beautifully written and there are so many layers to unpack.

I liked that the message in this book was put across in a way to elicit discussion with young children but not overtly preachy.

Alan MortonReviewed in the United Kingdom on January 22, 20221.0 out of 5 stars Bought new, received a dirty used book.
I have no problems with the content of the book itself. My problem lies with Amazon and the state the book arrived in, the edges are grimy, covered in prints, has crayon marks. So I suspect my "new" book is actually a return...
