The main characters are the pastor and a troubled teen, Johnny Goodwin. The pastor gathers at the high school flagpole with a group of students every morning before class to worship, pray, and study the Bible.
This is obviously a Christian-based story, which includes encouragement and Bible references aimed toward the book's characters. The fact that the pastor's family stuck together after experiencing their own tragedy is also uplifting. The book's ending is very inspiring.
A strength is the very sad fact that bullying and teen suicide are real and current societal concerns. I recommend this book for pre-teens through adults."
The young adult fiction book, A Friend I Didn't Know, contains a beautiful message of hope for today's teens and young adults. The story progresses well from chapter to chapter and the reader gets to know the main characters in a truly personal way. The illustrations are beautiful! I highly recommend this book as a "must read"!
From the Back Cover
Johnny is an outcast among his peers. Born into a troubled family, taunted at school, and struggling to find his place in the world, the despondent young man believes there's no hope for him. His skewed beliefs push him to contemplate the unthinkable, but Pastor Brian isn't prepared to allow another child to end his life.
Patricia is the epitome of the "girl next door." A beautiful teen, she is full of life, a skilled cheerleader, and adored by all.Girls want to be just like her. Boys want to be with her. But not every aspect of her life is perfect. Her star quarterback boyfriend lives life on the wild side. One mistake in the dark of night changes her life forever.
Three lives. Each touched by tragedy. Each one craving something greater. Can they find peace, happiness, and a new zest for life after loss?
"In the fifth grade, I was bullied because of my weight. I was called many names such as "fat," "blob," and "meatball." All of those words were very mean and they always hurt me.
Most of the time, I'd start a verbal and physical fight with the accusers. Sometimes this would result in school suspension and detention. Bullying is not something to be proud of and someone will always be harmed by it."
