The Pros: This curriculum has made it possible to effectively work with a group of high school chemistry students that only meets once a week for an hour. I consider that an incredible help. The lessons are for the most part extremely hands-on and easy to conceptualize. The games and activities are creative, yet to-the-point, and definitely enjoyed by high school-aged students.
The author has done an excellent job presenting the “mathy” chemistry topics such as stoichiometry in a way that all students can understand and learn. The textbook is excellent in that it is also a student workbook, so everything is kept together (readings and practice problems) in one place. The textbook is consumable in this way—each student needs his/her own. The manipulatives book that can be purchased to supplement the total curriculum is a must—it is a wonderful addition. These extras make many Chemistry concepts quite hands-on, fun and understandable! Definitely worth the extra 10 bucks!
One of the greatest part of this curriculum is the willingness of the author to provide online instructional videos for teachers which is a huge timesaver when planning each weekly lesson...in addition, he is available and very willing to help via email correspondence! He really cares that your students are learning chemistry. He will help you if you get stuck. It is obvious that he is an experienced teacher with much experience and passion in this field.
The cons: This curriculum could use a better editor in its next edition. However, the typos found throughout the textbook and answer book do not diminish the teaching or learning. In fact, it became a class challenge to find the next typo which always lightened the mood in the class.
I have a Masters in Nursing and had two college chemistry classes but never truly understood it. I memorized enough to pass the exams. This was one reason why I wanted our 8th grade children to learn chemistry and the other is that with their previous science curriculum there was no exposure to chemistry.
I received my text over the summer to help me prepare for the classes in the fall. Within no time, I totally understood what I had missed out on in my college classes. We all now know the WHY, not just the WHAT, when chemical reactions occur. Even though it has been 25 years since my college days, I want to go back and do it all over again!!
Another bonus is that our children are in Science Olympiad and they placed 1st in a chemistry related event. I have NO regrets for doing Friendly Chemistry and wish they offered an advanced course!
