I've just finished reading Friendly Fire. All I can say is WOW!

It might be easy to think these things do not happen locally, in your own community. But I promise you, they do. I took a look back here in my own Buffalo-Niagara region, and here are some of our own regional incidents that parallel the ones outlined in the book . . . .

* A Lackawanna animal control officer is asked to come help with some free-roaming cats and shoots and kills a mother cat and her kittens. Charges are dismissed. And the animal control officer still retains his job, name prominantly featured on the Lackawanna government website.

* A holiday party ensues at the City of Buffalo Animal Shelter after hours, when an animal control officer slashes the throat of a pit bull housed there. A judge dismissed the charges on condition the officer never work at the animal shelter again. He kept a job with the city, transferred to another department.

* One of our most "respected" local shelters (Erie County SPCA) killed a beloved pet that had been picked up stray less than 24 hours later. Harley was 17 yrs old and suffered from a bit of cognitive confusion. But that didn't make his family love him any less. The shelter was closed to the public and would not open until the next day. The family's son rode his bicycle to the shelter and arrived at the earliest possible moment to retrieve his dog, only to overhear shelter workers talking about a dog that came in hours before and was "euthanized." The shelter, in defiance of state law requiring a minimum stray hold, didn't apologize at all; they proceeded to blame the family instead.

Congrats to Nathan and Jennifer Winograd, on this fantastic, yet very disturbing look into the truth (you will be outraged) about the self proclaimed "Animal Rights" groups, The unethical PETA, the Inhumane HSUS, and the cruel ASPCA, as well as the concentration camps for pets, otherwise, yet erroneously, known as animal "shelters".

It is a sad yet established truth, that these groups advertise themselves as "defenders" of pets, and yet, these fraudulent groups are, in fact, themselves murderers of pets, and defenders of others who also wish to do pets harm.

In Friendly Fire, you will read about the deranged cult known as PETA, the unethical bunch of degenerates, who promises pet lovers that they will "find good homes for" pets, and yet proceeds to murder the pets within hours afterwards, WITHOUT making any effort to find them "good homes". You will read about how the "leader" of the PETA pet murdering cult, the evil (no fooling) Ingrid Newkirk, considers killing a healthy, adoptable pet, to be an act of "kindness" and "love". Even Charles Manson has a firmer grasp of reality than Newkirk does. Every sane individual knows that murder is unethical, and so is PETA.

"We do not advocate for 'Right to Life' for animals" ~ PETA's Ingrid Newkirk

By the way, have you heard that PETA actually SUPPORTS the proposed Horse Slaughter? It's true.

In Friendly Fire, you will also read about the self proclaimed "Humane Society of the United States", "led" by hypocritical miscreant, Wayne Pacelle. Pacelle, who is the BFF (Best Forever Friend) of the most notorious animal abuser and murderer in recent memory, Michael Vick, and Pacelle actually helped Vick to GET A NEW DOG, recently!

Nathan Winograd does a thorough job of assessing the mess that the American animal shelter system is currently in. He dispels common excuses shelters have used to justify the mass killing of animals and comes up with practical, life-affirming alternatives. After spending years as a supporter of PETA, HSUS, and ASPCA, and believing that euthanasia was a legitimate solution to "overpopulation," the scales fell from my eyes as I read about the inaccurate representation of facts and the deeply-flawed policies of these organizations. I now devote my time and money to a local no-kill shelter where I know where my money goes, and I know how the animals are treated. Companion animals enrich our lives in such deep ways. We owe it to them to read this book.

Winograd's first book "Redemption" has already changed the world of animal welfare in the USA and beyond. The shelters shelters in the USA that are receptive to change are already changing due to the road map laid out in that book, and the public pressure that has resulted from it.

Friendly Fire tells a different store: Why have the shelters that have yet to embraced the no kill movement not done so? The answers are both shocking and informative. Everyone who considers themselves an "animal person" should read it.

It is visually stimulating, engaging and deserves a genera all its own. It is neither visual coffee table book, or written text. It is a creative blending of the two that is informative and interesting.

Yet another home run from the Winograds. Too many of us have been hoodwinked at some point in our animal-centered lives of our time, emotion and finances by the likes of the so-called major players in the animal welfare/rights movement. The brilliance and courage of Friendly Fire is that for really the first time, the likes of HSUS, PeTA, and ASPCA to name a few are exposed for the charlatans they are.

Friendly Fire shows us the means, methods and alarming hypocrisy of these groups as they rake in millions of dollars at the expense of the public and more importantly the lives of millions of animals. Not only do these groups often do the killing themselves, their influence and misguided reputations are the excuse used by thousands of shelters to do the same.

The Winograds eloquently show us how these organizations use their public relations machines to brainwash the populace. For some organizations it's an old political trick: adopt (or hijack) a cause, implement massive fundraising efforts, make lots of money off a caring but often naïve public, continually push out `goal' dates to line the coffers, and all the while blame the public for too many animals not enough homes. All with the same price tag, more animals needlessly sent to HSUS, ASPCA and PeTA's heaven in the sky.

Still other groups outrightly and unabashedly kill animals that any average citizen would think is so contradictory to their purported mission that it is seemingly unbelievable. Well it's not. It happened in a community near you yesterday, today and will so likely tomorrow. And finally someone has uncovered their tactics and motives. As a result this is an important book, a necessary book. For anyone who has experience in the animal movement, it is more eye opening than you can imagine.
