Just to refresh your memories, Kelly and Sam, “re-meet” at a party thrown by Kelly’s parents. To say they are an unlikely couple is putting it mildly. Sam is a retired fiftysomething, who had a long, loving relationship with his late wife, Sarah. Sam took the loss of his wife very hard, retreating into his own world. Kelly, on the other hand, a vivacious twentysomething, is just starting out life’s journey. Kelly is still in school, going for her advanced degrees in the rather specialized realm of pharmaceutical invention and marketing. Sam had retired from the field some years before, after a very noted career that left him among the leading figures in that particular arena. Indeed, the story of Kelly and Sam began with the young woman seeking career advice from the older professional.
At this point, Freier could have used the Sam-Kelly story as the driver for what could have been a pretty steamy one-off novel about BDSM, steamy sex and other exercises. It would have been easy to have the couple romp through various highly charged scenes, however, Freier did not do that.
Instead, Freier, an author of considerable talent whose work keeps getting better, kept the unlikely couple together. She started them on a journey of shared experience and growth that would lead them through a quite an uncommon birthday party and an even more interesting trip to Europe. Reading the parts of the “Experiences” saga that cover these story points, “Birthday Experience” and “European Experience,” we see two very different “experiences” occurring.
The first is the growth and deepening of the Kelly-Sam relationship. It moves from highly unlikely to deeply intimate and loving over time. Though just months apart, “Birthday” and “European” illustrate that people can create loving, intimate relationships, even from the unlikeliest of beginnings. The second is the growth and a deepening of a second, even weirder relationship, “the girls” and “Kelly-Sam.” Who could have thought that even as Kelly and Sam’s May-December relationship matured and grew that a second, loving, multi-character relationship could blossom? Well it did, under Freier’s skillful and highly creative guidance.
In “Friends,” we find that just as the Kelly-Sam hookup has grown, the “girls-Kelly/Sam” has also taken on a life of its own. Each relationship has matured in ways that are similar and yet far different. Both relationships are trusting, nonjudgmental, creative and supportive: Kelly and Sam care for each other and “the girls – Linda, Julie and Kathy.”
One can easily ask how it is possible? However, under Freier’s skillful authorship, we just see it happen, much like life just happens all around us. That, perhaps, more than anything else is the key to Freier’s writing. Freier, whose thought processes are quite imaginative, is a natural author. Though you know from the start of each book that the author is in tight control over the proceedings, you never realize it. The writing style is relaxed, even playful, and always fresh. Though contrivance is essential to any author who must move the characters along the plotline so the story will move, nothing in Freier’s writing seems contrived. It is as if we are watching a mirror of life.
It is life, played out, though, against a subtext of sexuality and sexual play. No, these novels aren’t for the timid as they get rather explicit at times, but they are not racy, at all. It just seems a natural outgrowth of the relationships that Freier has created. Like a skillful painter, the author uses sexual play and BDSM as the canvas upon which she paints quite a lovely and loving story of relationships that occur and play out against a highly unusual backdrop.
It is a background that could easily have degenerated into the usual XXX-rated novel of sex for sex’s sake and titillation for titillation’s sake, but it isn’t. “Friends” is as far away from that portrayal as the sun is from Mars. The novel concentrates on the people and their interactions rather than just the mechanical structure. Granted, there are novels that look at the basic sex act and succeed because of the monomania of their authors, however, this isn’t one of those novels. To me, it is far more as the characters seem real and fully featured. I’ll grant that I continue to enjoy reading Simone Freier because she is a fantastic author. Now, pulling myself back into the role of reviewer, I have to state that Freier’s ability to keep things real lifts her a cut above others in the field of sex and sex games.
One of the interesting things about Freier’s work is how she keeps the anticipation going. The central theme could have become well mined and stale by now, but, let me tell you it isn’t. The fact is there’s another trip coming up in the next part of the multi-volume saga that I can hardly wait to read.
Freier leaves nothing out when writing. She's the Goddess of Details, which I totally love and appreciate. From the food that Sam carefully plans, buys, prepares and serves, to the temperature of the sauna, to the final series of shots that Kelly and friends receive, the reader gets to go on the same journey that Freier's characters do--and it's a BLAST!!! Freier's manner of writing from both Kelly and Sam's perspectives makes the series interesting, as one doesn't always get both male and female viewpoints. She also includes introspective conversations that Kelly and Sam have with each other and with their friends concerning every topic under the sun, which flesh out the characters' natures.
Five star series!
It’s actually quite amazing how much information from the previous books is used to develop the characters like never before. While Sam and Kelly have both become very open sexually (as have Kelly’s friends), Kelly begins to wonder if Sam is truly open on an emotional level. Sexually, however, she pushes Sam’s openness quite a bit in a couple of chapters. And, as the title suggests, Sam pushes Kelly’s friends like never before.
The climax of the book takes place during a special event that Sam has set up for Kelly’s friends. Certain fetishes are explored that have never been explored in the series before. While some readers may be apprehensive about some of the ideas introduced, that is the benefit of having Kelly’s friends along for the ride. Because their personalities are so unique, and each has their own preferences, there are always at least three reactions presented to each of the experiences they share together. The most unique challenge faced by them at the end appears to make Kathy appear uneasy, while Linda appears intrigued, and Julie cackles with hilarity. By extension, the reader knows that any of these reactions is acceptable.
And that is where this series continues to succeed the most. By watching these characters push each other in terms of openness, we as readers are able to become more open to accepting new ideas (even if not necessarily inclined to try some of those ideas ourselves). While certain agreements between characters at the end of the book make it seem as if certain fetishes may not be particularly featured in the next installment, there is also promise of Sam’s emotional growth that will hopefully lead to a new sense of openness that has been growing steadily throughout the series. If you’re looking for real character growth in your romance and erotica, then “Friends’ Experience” will deliver more than any other installment in the series.
