Two dirty cops who were hit men for the mob. Author Tommy Dades was one of the investigators that made this case. It turns out that one of the cops was caught giving confidential info to the mob and was going to be fired by the NYPD.. At his department trial to fire him the assistant commissioner in charge of trials found him not guilty despite the overwhelming evidence to fire the cop. The book takes you down the dark road these two cops went so they could get paid by the people they were supposed to arrest.
I did find out one interesting side note in the book. In the 30's there was a mob informant named Kid Twist who was guarded by six NYPD detectives in a hotel in Brooklyn. Despite the overwhelming police presence Kid Twist ended being thrown out the window of his room. One of the cops guarding him was Murray Cutler. He is the father of famous John Gotti lawyer Bruce Cutler.

Friends of the Family gives an insider’s view, mostly from the view of city, district and state cops and attorneys, of late dealings of the mafia in New York and how two respected NYC policemen were involved with the mob in theft, corruption, kidnapping and murder. Almost as bothersome is the view — granted, from one viewpoint — of the age old us vs. them relationship between federal and local/state authorities. The more you read and hear, the more you have to be concerned about federal agencies and agents and their problems with ego threatening justice. This book provides a good look at police investigative procedures and legal wrangling as well as mob corruption. Interesting reading and info from several angles. A good true crime work.

I felt it was a very thorough view of the case from the viewpoints of the author's sources. I felt he spent considerable time with them to gather all their memories. The plus side is the portrait of men as they worked through developing and proving the allegations. The negative to this is drifting off into family issues and other unrelated threads. If you're interested in the real world the men who do the job encounter, it's an excellent resource. If you're more interested in the details of the case, those get a bit diluted.
I think it would have also have been more engaging and balanced to get details from the others involved. Other than his primary sources, most of the other material seems to come from either media or reading law enforcement reports.

I enjoyed reading this story. It was hard to put down. I read it in 2 days. I have always been interested in the Mafia. The story is written in plain, every day English with very little slang or idiom. I actually remember reading about some of the characters in local newspapers during the time when the story takes place.

If you want to know the true details of the biggest scandal in the history of the NYPD? This is the book. These 2 Detectives were doing hits for the mob. If not for the great work of a group of investigators, they would have gotten away with it. Really enjoyed it!

An excellent account of a newspaper reporter's attempt to opening a cold case involving several policemen involved with the Mafia. An extremely interesting account of how a reporter, the DA's office and the state reopen an old cold case in an attempt to bring justice to victim's families an others falsely accused.

The book was more the investigators than the actual crime and the wrong doers.

An interesting case in NY organised crime history, but this book gets bogged down in institutional and personal machinations.
Most people buying this will be aware of the case but if not, it's about two New York city cops who were not only linked to the mafia, but carrying out hits on their behalf.
It is told from the perspective of Detective Tommy Dades and his colleagues in what for convenience's sake I'll call the prosecutors office. A problem for readers outside the UK is that the book presumes quite a lot of knowledge about the US criminal justice system. Grand Juries, District Attorneys etc. On this theme, the discussions of the internecine conflict between different state, city and federal institutions became rather tiresome after a while. The same can be said of some of the personal conflicts which didn't have enough bearing on the case to warrant the amount of space they receive.
A quick read for crime buffs, but do not expect Golden Dagger winning panache in the writing style or structure.
