This unit is definitely larger than the old one, but not what I would consider intrusively large. It was out of the box and operating in under 5 minutes, the only assembly being snapping the 4 casters to the bottom of the unit and then rolling it into place. Reserve an extra minute to connect the unit to an exterior drain if that's how you want to handle the water.
With that in mind, I would say the only drawback of this unit is the extremely small capacity of the water bucket. It pulls out and empties easily, but doesn't hold much water at all. I needed to employ the bucket for the first day due to a delay in the delivery of a new drain hose, and the bucket filled within hours of turning the unit on. Now that might just be the high moisture levels of my basement (no standing water, but definitely a humid environment) but I definitely couldn't run this unit without draining it into the sump crock. It does it's job too well and fills up the bucket too quickly. I do like how the unit comes with a plastic hose extension, so connecting it to the hose can be done without the need for tools.
The unit is much quieter than the previous one. With the unit in the basement, I could hear the fan running on the old one on the first floor of my house and when the compressor kicked on it was audible on the 2nd floor. You don't even know this one is running. I attribute less operational noise it to the "squirrel cage" fan, a superior technology that reduces noise, is more efficient, and moves more air.
Operation has some presets you can select that will hold a certain moisture level. The unit cycles on and off when the desired humidity is reached. I'm using that option set on "basement", which dehumidifies down to 45%. The unit hygrometer does dispute my separate one by a few %, but not by much. You can also set the unit to run on a timer, or you can select the moisture level yourself.
Lastly, the next electricity bill I received after running this unit for a month was lower, even though the weather had been wetter.
Overall I'm very pleased.
I want to reiterate that while this unit was functioning properly, it did the job well! My complaint is the repair/service department at Frigidaire (Electrolux).
Update: My third customer service rep. was much more understanding and was able to schedule a replacement for me using the 2-4 year "sealed parts warranty". It was just unfortunate that it took three reps to get to one that could help me. I'll update as soon as I get the replacement.
So far this single unit has kept the basement at 45 - 48% RH. Just about perfect. And it's quiet.
Other things...its pretty for a dehumidifier, and its very quiet. I feel its worth the money, its protecting my basement as i wanted it too.
I dont know if removing the one star for the heat is warranted. I just dont understand dehumidification enough to know. I know that when the moisture is removed from the air it will naturally be warmer. So i dont know if this machine is to blame for the heat in my basement or if its actually an efficient machine that is doing its job well, and that the heat is just a byproduct. If there is a professional HVAC guy i would love to know and hear your comment. Im thinking about throwing an AC unit in the mix to cool it down and im curious the effects on the humidity alone with the AC, if they complement each other, or if its just more wasted electricity. But in the summer my basement went from a nice cool 65-70 but wet, to now 80-83 degrees. its hot down there, but i dont even think about mold now which was a problem for years with smaller units.
