Little Powerhouse
I can't say enough good things about this little air con. I first bought one earlier this summer for the master bedroom in our condo in the California mountains. (We're having a record-breaking heat wave here.) I wasn't allowed to do an permanent installation or attach anything to the exterior of our windows, so I secured it with ... duct tape. I was extremely happy with its effectiveness in 90 degree plus weather, so I bought a second unit for the second bedroom. This unit is way more powerful than advertised. We have two bedrooms, each with a connected bathroom, and the two bedrooms are connected by a living room-dining-room-kitchen combo room. Total floor space is a little under 1100 feet. With blinds closed to keep the sun put, these two little workhorses are keeping our entire condo in the mid 70s on 90+ degree days. And when winter comes, I can just pull off all the duct tape, lift them out of the windows, and put them in storage for the ski season. Just one warning if you try the duct tape thing. The air con unit will stay securely in a window frame when the upper window is pulled down into the groove on the top of the air con. You can duct tape the unit to the upper window and the window frame, and you can duct tape the windows to the inside of the frame, so nothing will move. However, the instructions say to use the exterior mount, so your air con won't fall out of the window when you open the window. So be careful to secure it to something inside the room, with rope or other tie-downs, while lifting it into and out of the window frame.

We finished a 10'x14' room in our attic for a home office. It's not tied into our central HVAC so we turned our eyes to a portable AC or a window unit. Our double-hung window opening was exactly 26.5". According to the box, it was supposed to fit and it did--barely. I used the bracket that came with the unit so we did not have to spring for an additional, expensive air conditioning support. I used both leveling feet on the bracket (the instructions only called for one) for maximum stability and weight distribution. Installation and set-up was easy. The instructions called for 2 people, but I had no issues by myself. In shipping, several of the heat distribution fins slightly bent (smushed) on the back of the unit, but not enough to worry about.

The unit is very quiet. We originally had ordered the LG Electronics LP0814WNR 115-volt Portable Air Conditioner with Remote Control, 8000 BTU and immediately sent it back. It was loud on low, horrendous on medium, and unthinkable on high. But this Frigidaire is great. Iin the words of Elmer Fudd, the Fwigidaire unit is wery, wery qwiet. Time will tell if we have any issues. For now, it is cooling as it is supposed to.

Several things I would change if I could. They need better weather stripping. The stuff feels cheap and is insufficient. There is a gap between the inner and outer windows when the window is opened. Frigidaire sent a piece of black weather stripping to go between the windows to keep out insects, rain, etc. Black? Really? I replaced it with white so it would not be as noticeable. These are minor points and should not dissuade you from buying the unit.

Overall, I would buy the unit again for the size of the room that we have. Stylish, compact, quiet, and relatively light.

I primarily bought this unit since a vast majority of all reviews seemed to agree that it's reasonably quiet, my personal main concern with window A/C's - I work in music / audio and therefore a constant hiss and hum are of great annoyance for me. In that respect I have to say that I am slightly underwhelmed: this model is fairly quiet for a window unit and the fan in idle (low speed) is very bearable, yet once the compressor kicks in and the fan revs up it gets very audible and it's not that far from average window AC's anymore. Overall it's a rather smooth sound though, no rattling or such so far, but then I've only had it for two days. Low frequency vibrations that can transfer into the walls are rather pronounced yet a thin strip of dense rubber to isolate the window frame did the trick, not an issue anymore.
As a disclaimer I have to say that I am operating it in a 12x10' room, so in a bigger space it will probably appear more quietly.

Other impressions: rather heavy for it's BTU / size and a little awkward to handle since weight isn't distributed very evenly. Once installed it looks alright though, overall build quality is good. The "low profile" factor seems a bit overrated to me, it's not that outrageously low in my books, but nice to have something that is at least as small as possible compared to the competition.

What I really like (and which was one of the main selling points to me) is that the cold air comes out on the top which in my opinion makes much more sense with the usual thermo-dynamics (warm air rises, cold air sinks) - it helps circulating the air nicely without any hint of wind which some people would maybe miss. I love that it's rather subtle, not looking for a beach-breeze emulation in my bedroom. Cooling performance seems to be perfectly fine, but then again, it's a small space.

Controls are straight forward, I would have preferred to be able to see the measured temperature as well instead of always seeing the target number, but then it's usually wildly different from my room thermometer anyway, so that does not matter too much.

Overall my impression is that this unit is slightly overpriced, for literally twice the price of an average middle-of-the-road window AC I would either expect an even smaller footprint or quieter performance. If $100 plus or minus don't matter much I would recommend it though since it is decent and acceptably quiet, albeit not on a completely premium level.

Several things are to be said about this appliance. I bought it partially on the strength of one of the reviews where the sound of three ACs were recorded and played back showing the setting on each of them. WHAT THE PERSON CLEVERLY FAILED TO INCLUDE WAS IMPORTANT! That is, the recordings are for the fan ONLY. When the compressor kicks in, it's 5 times as loud as the fan. The fan itself seems to be fairly quiet. The compressor is typical in that it has that 60 Hz cycle sound, a bit more jangling to the ear than the fan.
THE AIRFLOW UPWARD: PRO: the air distribution in the room is way better with this setup. There is a nice flow with nothing blowing right at me! I use this AC for my bedroom and a nice airflow makes a big difference. CON: Because the air blows straight up, like into my mini blind, I had to devise something to push the air a bit away from 90 degrees. I used foam-core (art store), cut slots for everything in the way of inserting 3" into the vent. This works perfectly and the mini-blind rests between the foam core and the window frame so all the air is coming away from the wall as it should have been designed to do.
THE AIR DIRECTING LOUVERS: PRO: it is designed not to impede the air from getting out of the machine, not restrict the airflow. CON: it really does nothing to direct the air sideways. There are two parts to air control, one is a big tilting louver and that helps direct air into the room, it does that. Then there is a rotating dial that seems to be designed to get the air to move toward one side or the other. It is not designed to do it's job.
QUIETNESS: Pro: well we have had cool nights every night dropping below 68 F. So the compressor does not kick in to wake me up. I have the fan set on Low and that is fairly quiet, but not way quiet. If you are sensitive to sound while sleeping, earplugs worked. CON: if you have heat to deal with, the compressor is going to run. It's not the loudest out there but it definitely makes noise that would keep me awake.
SLEEP SETTING: PRO: nothing but pro for this. After some time, the temp setting rises 2 degrees. Then half hour later it raises 2 more degrees. Result is you are cool when you lay down, for me 72 F is my setting. So 4 degrees higher, 76 seems really perfect for sleeping. Far less need for the compressor.
APPEARANCE: PRO: looks really well designed. CON: for me, none. It sticks into the room a few inches more than those blowing straight at you, but that works fine.
INSTALLATION: PRO: well balanced on the ledge, extra hardware for ledge height difference. CON: those little accordion slidey things that fill the window are set back from where the metal part of the AC fits against the frame, so when I go to screw into the wood frame, the screw holes in the bottom of the accordion thing line-up with empty space! The wood cracked as I tried to force it to work. S T U P I D.

I think the engineering on the main body is really top-notch. Then with air vent and these accordion things, the engineer was fired or quit or marketing said times up, we go to production whether these things work of not. I think maybe the $500.00+ AC would be quiet, so there is a compromise in spending less.

So I like many things about it and it generally works for me, but it's not as quiet as I was led to believe, airflow is not well controllable, and installation screws need a fix.
