Fringe - The Burning Man (Novel #2) Mass Market Paperback – August 30, 2013
Author Christa Faust (Choke Hold, Supernatural) is working hand-in-hand with the television writers to create new adventures uncovering the secrets of the series. The first novel revealed how Walter Bishop and William Bell discovered the drug Cortexiphan--and the alternate universe! Book two will explore how Olivia Dunham first was subjected to Cortexiphan experiments, with catastrophic results.
Faust has been given unprecedented access to stories that have not been told on-screen, but weave directly into the series canon, much as Joss Whedon's Buffy graphic novels continue that series' official storyline.

About the author

Christa Faust is the author of eleven novels, including the Edgar and Anthony award nominated MONEY SHOT, CHOKE HOLD, and HOODTOWN, as well as the Scribe award winning novelization of SNAKES ON A PLANE and hardboiled lesbian P.I. series BUTCH FATALE: DYKE DICK.
She grew up in New York City, in the Bronx and Hell’s Kitchen. She’s been making stuff up her whole life, and spent most of her teen years on endless subway rides, cutting school and scribbling stories.
After High School finally had enough of her, she worked in the Times Square peep booths and later as a fetish model and professional Dominatrix.
She sold her first short story when she moved to Los Angeles in the early 90s. After nearly 20 years in her beloved adopted city, she still considers herself an expat rather than a native.
She’s an avid reader and collector of vintage paperbacks, a Film Noir enthusiast and a Tattooed Lady. She writes primarily Hardboiled crime fiction, but also does work-for-hire media tie in novels.
She lives in Porn Valley with too many shoes and her Boston Terrier Butch.

I'm a bit confused by all the negative reviews here on Amazon. Did we read the same book? This one was even a bit 'fringeier' than the first book of the series. Sure, I guess it wasn't what I had expected, but I think Christa Faust did a wonderful job painting Olivia as a 16 year old. We saw young 'Olive' on the show, but we never saw teenaged Olivia. Now I feel like I've seen her.
I also thought the story was fun and exciting.
I loved it and can't wait for the November release of the third installment!
I definitely take issue with the plot, because I don't think it follows what we know from the show. While some details are accurate and some could be disputed, some are just flat-out wrong. There is nothing to suggest that Olivia knowingly came into contact with anything paranormal in her youth. The entire hospital aspect was utterly absurd.
I think that fans will be split on this one, with a slight majority hating it. My feelings were pretty neutral. I enjoyed it enough to keep reading, but not enough that I would ever read it again.
It seems to me that this author has a tendency to overdo the supernatural, and to try to wink to Fringe fans. A lot of random characters were introduced, and that was annoying, too... I just felt as though this author probably got a rundown of the series, watched a few episodes (or watched quite a few but didn't pay attention). The most annoying thing to me is that the author's personality overshadows the story. She clearly doesn't realize that most Fringe fans are intelligent people who have paid attention to the details.
As a side note, this book (like the first) could have used a better (or second) proofreader/editor. I've noticed that this book and the one preceding it get worse toward the end of the book, as though there was a rush to finish. Fortunately, by this point I've been just mildly annoyed/frustrated enough that I want to finish the book as well
.
In short, this is NOT the worst book I have ever read. It is also not the best. Very mediocre, just like the first (but slightly worse than the first). I will still read the next book.
