This is a unique album. A full orchestral soundtrack adds a lot of emotion and atmosphere to the show. I believed there was something special about the musical backing of the episodes, but I didn't' fully realize what it was. This scale of music is a rare treat in the Television landscape. Orchestral compositions are expensive and the alternative electronic/synthesized sound is a usually suitable and cheaper option.
These are a few things I learned from research:
-The only show to utilize an orchestral score for many years was the Simpsons and later on Family Guy. This is surprising to me, because comedic-animations would seem take very little advantage of the depth and emotional out-pour of such a feature.
-LOST is another example of a show featuring an orchestra. From what I gather it was well received and recognized for it's score. Interesting enough it is scored by Michael Giacchino; the one and the same that is composing for Fringe.
-Human Target is the most recent user of this type of scoring.
Any show that attempts to drastically alter a persons emotions, benefits greatly from this age old adage. It loans a little grit and humanity and adds to the atmosphere and immersion of the stories being told.
One of my favorite tracks is the opening sequence, of course. It is the longer sequence featured in the Pilot episode, but without the little added sound effects of the reeling from the projector. Every time I hear this music, I know I'm going to be in for a ride; I'll be blown away and intrigued by the time the show ends.
Here is a rundown of my favorite tracks:
The Bishop of Essex County - Love the ominous mystery surrounding the introduction of the mentally ill Walter Bishop.
The Equation - Math + Music = Beauty and the ability to walk through walls. Great take-back to one of my favorite episodes.
All Along the Bell Towers - Originally I thought I was blown away by the introduction of one of the more mysterious characters of Fringe mythology, William Bell. Then the show then left me slack-jawed once I realized the building they were standing in.
