What? You say that the Fountain of Youth in St. Augustine is a "tourist trap" and that Juan Ponce de León may have never visited the place during his 1513 voyage to Florida? Authors Lesley Abravanel and Laura Miller got that right, along with the fact that "the fountain's water smells and tastes awful." That it's a tourist trap cannot be disputed, but this reader thinks that the authors missed the boat by not including a photo of one of the red and yellow on black signs for the place that to long time Florida residents typically indicates that it's a tourist trap.

And that's not the only omission, as the Gamble Rogers Memorial State Recreation Area in Flagler Beach isn't even given mention in the pages, even though it's only thirty miles south of St. Augustine. The late Gamble Rogers was a folk artist known for the recurring theme in his songs and stories about characters and places in a fictional Florida county, and he died a truly heroic death and was honored by his native state with this park on the Atlantic Ocean. A Florida native, Rogers influenced musicians such as Jimmy Buffett, who dedicated his 1994 album Fruitcakes to him.

As a former Florida resident for years, was looking forward to Frommer's Florida 2012 (Frommer's Color Complete) as a way of updating my own knowledge of a state that I used to call home for many years.

I am a travel photographer and writer and so I own many, many travel guides. I buy the Frommer's guides because the info in them is, if nothing else, almost always very reliable. I'm a bit disappointed in this book, however, only in that it seems heavily biased toward restaurants--and not cheap ones, either. I had really hoped this was (based on the description, touting it's "full color" format) going to be more of a visual guide to attractions.

Even though I've been to Florida a lot, I like to see and read about unknown and off-the-beaten-path locales. This book really doesn't cover that too much--or maybe I've just explored so much that it all seems familiar to me. That's possible. Anyway, you can never have too many guide books, but if you're looking for something purely visual, there are a few other books that do that better. While it is illustrated (and the reproduction isn't bad), it's not a visual guide--as I had hoped.

OK, that said, I will say that the info on the well-known locales/destinations is well-written and worth reading (I found the material on the Keys particularly informative). If I was visiting Florida for the first time, I don't think that I would mind having this as my guidebook (again, despite my reservations, it's well researched and nicely written), but being a visual person, I'm more inclined to buy a book that has lots of full-page photos--like the Compass Guides. And if you're looking for a restaurant guide, this will help--it covers more of them than most guide books, I think (though I still like the AAA books that are free to members!).

I'm very satisfied with this guide. It even includes a loose driving map with fairly good scale. I shouldn't have purchased a separate map. Amazon needs to give better descriptions of its items (old complaint).

I have been traveling to different parts of Florida for years, and I am always on the look-out for accurate travel information. I wish this book had more information on the Gulf, or I wish they would publish a book on JUST the Gulf, but still a good guide and worth the purchase price.

The authors of Frommer's Florida 2012 seem not to be aware that many of us use a GPS to locate sites on our trip. I just returned from a one week Florida tourist vacation where my wife, our grandson and I visited Disney, Seaworld, Blue Springs, Kennedy Space Center, St. Augustine and Canyon Zip Line in Ocala. I struggled with the Frommer guide to find an address for each location. In most cases the address was either missing, in an obscure location or, in the case of Blue Springs, not listed at all. Fortunately our Garmin was able to locate most sites based on the name of the site, rather than the address. In some cases we needed to use the web. The impression that I got while attempting to use the guide in the field was that the text had been rolled forward from a pre-GPS era with little updating. Several items were out of date. The City Visitor Center 45 minute movie of St. Augustine's early history hadn't been shown for a year. The Kennedy Space Center enhanced package was no longer available. I can't recommend this guide to any serious Florida tourist.

As with another review I did on the Frommer's guide book to Greece Frommer's Greece Day by Day (Frommer's Day by Day - Full Size) Frommer's Guide to Florida is another reference book that might be good for someone who is in the early stages of planning a trip to Florida to give you a very broad overview of the state, but you will need to do much more research on the internet for location specific information. Consult Trip Advisor or some other travel site to find the hotel you are looking for, and plan to visit Yelp for a local restaurant recommendation. While there are parts to the book that are helpful, such as ratings and pricing for hotels and restaurants, the recommendations themselves are a bit thin. Many of the hotel recommendations were done for high end hotels and had limited options for moderate and lower-priced hotels. I did appreciate the icons scattered throughout the book that listed fun facts, best bets for kids, insider tips, and overrated experiences, but it was not enough to make feel the book was all that useful.

One of my biggest disappointments in the book was the section for Orlando. Almost anyone planning a trip to Disney would consult a Disney specific guide book, however this book seemed to focus so much of the chapter about Orlando to Disney, that it failed to give adequate information about other attractions you might want to see while you are in the area. We have already visited Disney, but plan to go back this fall. We decided that we would spend less time at Disney so we could see some other attractions in the area, but this book does not provide enough information to help us decide what other attractions we would like to visit.
