From the Manufacturer

Shut-the-Box Bookshelf Game from Front Porch Classics is a beautiful version of the English sailors' game. This fast-paced game is fun and addictive and can be enjoyed by any number of players. Our whole family loves this game. I like this version because it includes the history and rules of the game on the inside cover. I also like that you can close the cover and not lose the dice. The construction is a little flimsy and there is not enough felt on the board which makes the dice rolling a little noisy. We added a piece of felt on top of the board and it is much better.

This is fun and it makes a great gift. We play while we are watching TV or having a conversation and just pass the box around the room. I have played with eight year olds and sixty year olds. The children love it when they get to "shut the box" and its fun to watch them as they add up the numbers in ther heads. Sometimes, when it's just us "old folks," eveyone puts down a quarter and we play for the "pot".
The bookshelf version of the game not only looks just like another book if you put it on a bookshelf, but it is attractive when you leave it sitting on a coffee table. It is also the best size for passing around. I have played with the bigger chest type box and that one is nice to look at but you usually have to get up out of your seat to hand it to the next person. It is awkward and heavy. This one can be handed over with one hand. Our family enjoys "Shut the Box" so much that I bought several and gave them as gifts.

I have given this game to all of my adult children so they can share and play it with their children. We are a very competitve family and "Shut the Box" let's you compete against your self as well as others. It is great for teaching young children to add and choose number combinations. I am 70 years old and I grew up with this game always out on the breakfast bar in our home. I think my parents placed it there to keep us occupied while waiting to be fed.

I bought this for my mentally challenged brother after playing it at a friends house. It is great for keeping your arithmetic skills honed.

It is just plain fun and you can adapt the game to meet the users needs.

My brother throws the dice and then puts the appropriate key or keys down.

He doesn't keep score but it kept him occupied and using his counting skills. We heard that box shutting all Christmas day.

This is the most awesome game ever. All 3 of our kids love to play it!! One thing I like about it is if you have nobody to play with, you can play by yourself and it's just as fun. I had never even heard of this game until my son came home from a trip he was on. Someone there had it and he soon became addicted to it. I also like the fact that it doesn't have a lot of pieces to keep up with - only a pair of dice. My kids are 14 and 10 (twins) and they love it!

This game just arrived. I bought it for a Christmas gift for my sister but it was snatched up by my daughter instead. She has been playing it for hours. The box is sturdy in build. I don't understand why I read it was flimsy in the reviews. It is thicker than it looks in the picture. I bought this model because I thought it was about an inch and a half thick but it is a full three inches deep instead. The label is turned so it opens like a book, which is why I think they called it a bookshelf game. I thought it was called that because it would fit on a bookshelf standing up on end taking up less room. But it is a box and sets on shelf lid side up, taking up more room. I also wish the dice were in a velvet jewelry bag so they will be harder to lose. I fixed this problem by just now ordering a jewelry bag here on amazon for around two dollars including shipping. I bought this one with nine tiles, but grownups might prefer the one's with twelve tiles for more play. Also if your going to play with someone else and not alone you really need two of them or one of the double sided games because flipping and returning the tiles to the next players set up is a pain in the A#S, or you have to keep track on a piece of paper what tiles were still up for what player....All in all the game is fun and educational for the young ones and just plain fun for the adults... five stars easy

I ordered three of these fun games for Christmas. Two came from one vendor, the third from another. The "spine" of the book is glued to the box, but not well. Two of the boxes (one each from each vendor) broke during shipping. Additionally, one of the "boxes" was improperly assembled with the numbered tiles in the wrong sequence ( ... 5, 8, 9, 4 ... ). Finally, another box had the rod holding the tiles placed in holes in the wrong location - tiles could never stay in position.

The game is fun, but the quality of these games are about as poor as I've ever seen. Look to another manufacturer.

Saw a game like this at a gift shop and was intrigued by the way it just looked like an old box. Always trying to find something different from video games and characters to entertain the grandkids, so I got this from Amazon and gave it at Christmas. An instant hit! Even the little ones that don't do math were fascinated by the flipping numbers. Even my Mon & Dad, in their late 70's, loved it. It probably won't have the lasting intellectual value of a good card game, but it's sure a great way to teach kids simple math fast, without them even knowing it.
