This is the essential tool for organizational change. Mahesh Rao's book is the text I have been looking for to accelerate my comprehension of how to get the job of organizational change, DONE.
There are many authors out there who will provide philosophical insight, conjoined with limited or no practical implementation guidance. Mahesh Rao's book provides the approach, the tools and the practical guidance you really need. All you have to do is fill in the forms and you are already on the way to building a comprehensive and result orientated change plan. Reading the narative and applying his guidance will accelerate you further towards a successful transition.
This book joins my select few (less than 4) business books, that provide the practical guidance for me to be a highly effective strategy planning manager.
Front Runners by Mahesh Rao
Front Runners is one of the best books on organizational transformation that I have read. I found many valuable transformational tools and convincing management philosophy that I will use as in my company. Mahesh masterfully weaves compelling arguments for gathering, analyzing and using data to affect meaningful and measurable change. The book is as much an operator's manual on data collection as it is an inspirational guide to getting the best performance from your company's people. Mahesh finds a way to keep the general business reader's attention during the most dry subjects that quantitative experts and policy wonks would find exhilarating. He navigates the tricky issue of what should come first, the people or the dream. He contends that the issue of selecting qualified people for key positions in the organization can be balanced by development of current employees. The bottom line according to the book is that the newly devised strategy takes priority over old relationships and the right people must be put in the right roles. I appreciate his attention to employee motivation and rewards systems. He spends a great deal of time emphasizing the quality, scope and timing of recognizing the small as well as the great accomplishments. Front Runners is a comprehensive how-to guide for evaluating where you are as a company, where you want to go and how to get there. Managers at all levels will find something useful in this book. Mahesh shares his wisdom and experience in great detail and with enthusiasm. I will go to Front Runners from time to time to get a great refresher on optimizing my organization.

I was quite pleased with the positive tone and liked the structure. I believe the book would serve as a good primer, guide, and outline for anyone entering into a transformational endeavor. Though not exhaustive, I felt it was an easy to consume, clear and straight-forward treatise of a not always clear and straight-forward process. I feel there was value to the tools included, even if to help illustrate the concepts discussed at a glance. The case studies helped illuminate various real-world scenarios that a transformational leader might encounter while implementing various stages. I was also glad to see that the author pointed out various risks along the way such as assumptions often made by executives looking for the short path.
I must also compliment the publisher, as the quality of the book, type face, and heavy pages not only elevated the reading experience, but appear to be built well enough to withstand the rigors of constant reference.
On that note, I look forward to recommending "Front Runners" on my list of required reading and on-hand reference during my next transformational engagement.
