I use yeast flakes as a substitute for grated cheese (I'm a plant-based eater), and KAL and Bob's Red Mill brands for example, are excellent - mild tasting and delicious. I dislike giving bad reviews, but I'll never order this product again. Amazon carries both KAL and Bob's Red Mill brands. You can't go wrong with those.
As I looked online, I realized I could end up spending a lot of money and end up with a lot of yeast we didn't like. So I picked up some Bob's in powder form locally, to try. Didn't care for the smell so I was hesitant about actually using it, but I hadn't quite run out yet. Then wonder of wonders a local store had Frontier mini flake and when I bought some and got it home, I knew it was the mini flake we all knew and loved!
Taste, of course, is a matter of taste! Well this is the one for us. I really have to wonder about the reviewers (of other brands) who say the yeast tastes like cheese. ???? I think they've been vegan so long they don't really remember cheese. Anyway I'm not looking for imitation cheese.
The things I use this for are:
add to soup
add to gravy
mix with wheat germ and cornmeal as a breading for deep-fried marinated tofu (only make that for special occasions anymore)
mix with salt and garlic powder for popcorn (spray with Pam-type butter-flavor spray, then sprinkle and stir)
The mini flake is a size that works for all these purposes. I've used large flake for breading and that works fine but it wouldn't work so well on popcorn. Powder is too fine for breading but would probably be OK for my other uses. We're very happy to find this yeast.
Completes a feast for (wo)man or beast.
'Twill flavor to savor, (adds interest at least).
Best I've found looking north, south, west, and east.
