I rate this book 4.25 on a scale of 1-5.
Just to help put this book, and other similar types, into perspective here is a list of some of my favorite SiFi books (I tend to like action/adventure/drama with great characters and creative story lines):
Dune (my personal all time favorite space opera) - Frank Herbert (5.0)
Hyperion (the Book of Cantos series is awesome and ends with a bang) - Dan Simons (4.5)
Heroes Die - Matthew Stover (more Fantasy than SiFi but an awesome edge of your seat read) (4.5)
Star Force Series (all 10 books are fun reads) - B.V. Larson (4.25 on average)
Old Mans War - John Scalizi (4.25)
Forever War - Joe Haldeman (4.25)
Forging Zero (a brutal and nerve racking read, but fun) - Sara King (4.25)
Enders Game (fun story, but IMO not as good as many rate it) - Orson Scott Card (4.0 - 4.25)
Thanks for reading :)
EDIT: After reading these three books I looked on line to see how many more books I'd have to read to get to the end of the story. I found that it's now up to 12 books and many readers are saying what I said after three, there is no plot progression and it's just the same thing over and over again.
I'm really glad I did some reading before buying another book, I despise "never ending stories" with the single purpose of getting me to open my wallet over and over. No thanks, there are just too many books that have a beginning, a middle and an end demanding my time to put up with this.
I am an old science fiction fan - all kinds, for many years. I say that because it seems to me that the only way this writer could be getting good reviews is to assume that they are all coming from elementary or jr. high school kids that don't have a clue as to what good writing really is. I understand that every one can't be an Arther Clark or Ray Bradbury or Asimov, but PLEASE. I don't see how any mature, literate person could rate this writing anything but bad.
The lack of intrigue, the lack of subtlety, the lack of maturity, the lack of authentic detail, the lack of character development, the lack of story refinement -- this guy Brown writes like a 12 year old.
My takeaway from buying this ebook is simply to not trust the "star" system for Amazon Kindle books.
But... this is more of a space-opera/Fantasy book than a science fiction book in the sense that, known laws of physics like light speed, relativity, mass/energy etc are pretty much completely ignored. For example, in space, technically, sub-light top speed is not dependent on thrust, acceleration is. There it makes no sense when they look at a ship spec to say "it can only make 10% light at most"... no... just no. It also completely ignores time dilation at 50% light and a number of other laws of physics as we know them.
Further more, coincidences are much too common in this book, coincidences of absolutely astronomical proportions in fact. Jump millions of kilometers away in an infinite amount of empty space....coincidentally right next to two small ships.. wow... jump again, by mistake 1000 light years away smack dab in between ships in the middle of a battle... ONE THOUSAND LIGHT YEARS AWAY...hold on just a minute there...we just went from the mathematically almost impossible to "hand of God"/Fantasy level. And then Na-tan legend... we've left this universe and gone into full fantasy mode now...
I also read in other reviews that the Navy just doesn't work that way, that doesn't bother me at all... whatever...
The characters are relatively well done, the action is pretty well written and flows along, but the dialogs can become a bit stiff and bland. In fact I think the dialogs are what the author needs to work on most. The navy stuff and real "science" are easily fixed with a bit of research... but the dialogs.. that's hard.
So all in all, not a bad read for me and I will be reading the rest of the series hoping the author improves as it goes along. But not a classic, not a "real" Navy or military book, and more a Fantasy book than Science Fiction.
That's why... a 3.

Ryk Brown has begun with a great premise. There is nothing like a great series. This one should keep me occupied for a while.Published 20 days ago by Amazon Customer
I like Science Fiction that has Science in it. This is "vacuum fiction"; it's not even "space fiction" because the author doesn't understand what space is, beyond... Read morePublished 24 days ago by P. Menconi
