Good start to an entertaining, well-written space yarn

In the first episode a young ensign, Nathan, who is on his first posting, is assigned to an experimental craft the Aurora with powerful engines that can get up to speeds of about 80% the speed of light. The ship embarks some two months ahead of schedule due to political and military concerns. They only planned to take it for "a walk around the block" shakedown cruise but things got out of control real fast. The ship is attacked by the Jung and barely escapes, ending up a long way from Earth. I especially liked the competition between Nathan and Cameron as to who would be given the pilot's chair and who would be the navigator.

In the second episode the Aurora heads to the Haven system at the suggestion of Jalea, the rebel fighter who helped them against the Takaran. Haven, although not controlled by the Takaran is a dangerous place but offers a chance to gain needed supplies and perhaps repair their ship. They are over a thousand light-years from Earth and it would take many months to get home as their new FTL drive can only jump about 10 light-years at a time. Things seem to go well for a while as they hire a group of workers to harvest precious metals from the rings of the system's gas giant. Then things get dicey.

In the third episode Nathan and crew are consider their options. Tug, the rebel fighter, suggests going to the Corinair system where a rebel base had been built inside an asteroid but now lies empty. Nathan decides this is worth pursuing rather than heading home to Earth which could take many months. Nathan finds good use for its new crew members from Haven. Josh and his buddy Loki are put in charge of fixing up the shuttles and learning to pilot the Aurora using the training simulator while Tug's brilliant oldest daughter, Deliza, is helping Abby with the Jump Drive. Things go well for awhile until a Ta'Akar warship arrives and once again the Aurora must fight for its life.

The book has a reasonably good ending considering the series is far from over. I intend to keep reading this enjoyable series.

A fast-paced book with constant action-packed struggle by our hero crew and captain.

After a few chapters of character setup, this book really gets rolling as the crew and captain escape one dire situation after another. They overcome many tactical and intellectual challenges.

To avoid spoilers I'll state it this way: The basic concept of the series is that a HUGE technological breakthrough gives the crew an incredible advantage in space travel. The crew then has to tame it and keep it from the hands of their enemies.

While not perfectly written literature, it is a real page turner and I found myself reading every one of the 15 book series in quick succession.

This is the first book (containing episodes 1-3) of the 15 episode series.

I'm not a huge fan of really weighty sci-fi, big space operas and the like. I like sci-fi that's easily readable, so no convoluted politics, a relatively small number of protagonists and some good action. The Frontiers Saga has all this and more. It's not a popcorn sci-fi series, but isn't grand space opera either. This series is enthralling, enjoyable and not overly heavy. There are plenty of moments of tension which kept me reading into the wee hours, but there are just as many moments of light-hearted banter interspersing the action to make this hugely readable. The characters are interesting, believable and develop well over the course of the series. I've enjoyed every moment so far and haven't had to skip any pages yet.

I waited months before beginning this series but since starting it just over month ago I've burned through half the series. You should really be prepared to spend $57 on the entire series which currently sits at 15 books. While that may sound a lot to spend do bear in mind you might only get two or three novels from other authors for the same cost. This series is value for money, but more important it's an absolute page turner. Suitable for YA & older readers. Get it.

The first episode definitely felt like the new startrek. We're off on a training mission, and while testing a new drive system, trouble erupts that leaves all the seasoned officers dead and the new ensign in charge of the ship crewed by a bunch of newbie academy graduates. The end of the first episode left something lacking as far as a conclusion especially since they're all lost in space like starship voyager. The next two episodes have us escaping harrowing circumstances as we try to fix a very damaged spacecraft. Conclusion is that the ship needs lots of repair still, but the last of our ammunition was used to successfully win a battle. What comes next is still in the next episode(s). Few grammatical errors although this author likes to try and do something which continues to make no sense to me while if he tried to do something, I'd get it.

The author said it a kind of Sci Fi soap opera and maybe that's the way to view it. The story does not have too much depth, which left me a bit frustrated as it could easily have been given more depth. The story line, I think, lacks pace, and as such struggles to pull you in. There are a number of these books and I have only read the first three, buy the omnibus, so maybe it gets better as the story develops. I would not be averse to reading more of them, but don't feel any great need to do so at this point, which is why it is three stars and not more.

Wow! real Boys Own (for those old enough to remember) but in space.The guns never run out of ammunition except at critical moments(as per the old western gunfights) Fuel what ever type it is also does not seem to be a problem. I like science fiction which obeys the rules of physics as we know them and where it does not then a reasonable explanation is given Hence I can except jump space (the accepted way to get around quickly in science fiction) but when faster than light travel is introduced as a separate entity then it spoils the story a little. Having said that it is quite readable and the author is obviously planning a long series.

Well placed in the tradition of sci-fi. Space ships from several different worlds are pitched against each other in gripping action battles. Add in a little political intrigue and romance and you have a very good read. I hope the rest of the series continues in this vein.

Earth has only just reestablished enough technology to get back into space after a plague drove them back to a primitive culture for over a thousand years. They have limited "faster than light" travel capabilities and are anticipating an imminent invasion from a nearby star system. A new ship, under staffed and under equipped but fitted with a prototype drive that provides instantaneous long range travel jumps into the midst of an interstellar conflict involving some of earth's ancient extraterrestrial colonies. From here, the fight continues.
