Frozen, a full-length stage work told in two acts, is the first and only incarnation of the tale that expands upon and deepens its indelible plot and themes through new songs and story material from the film’s creators; in fact, this new stage production features more than twice as much music as the film. Like the Disney Theatrical Broadway musicals that have come before it, it is a full evening of theatre running over two hours.

Based on the 2013 film written by a trio of Oscar® winners, Frozen features music and lyrics by the creators of the film score Kristen Anderson-Lopez (Up Here, Winnie the Pooh, In Transit) and EGOT-winner Robert Lopez (Avenue Q, The Book of Mormon, Up Here) and a book by Jennifer Lee (Zootopia, Wreck-It Ralph), the film’s screenwriter and director (with Chris Buck). Frozen won 2014 Oscars for Best Song (“Let It Go”) and Best Animated Feature.

Poignant Melodies and an Empowering Story Make Frozen a Musical Soundtrack Worth Owning

Frozen is a stunning musical achievement. I am impressed by the sheer depth of this fairy tale that explores the complex relationship between two sisters. The story is not dependent on traditional tropes but twists them beautifully, and the music of this soundtrack sweeps you away to a faraway land. The female leads possess perfect voices for their roles. The woman portraying Elsa has strength and vulnerability beautifully combined in her singing, fully conveying the young woman's fear and ultimate strength. The actress portraying Anna has an innocent quality to her pure tones, but the depth of her singing increases as the naive princess is brutally forced to grow up. The ensemble cast is stunning, evoking Arandell's subjects, their hopes, dreams and fears. I loved the actors portraying Prince Hans and mountain man Christoff. Their voices suit their roles, although I wish the compilers had put Hans third reprisal of his theme song on the album. I would have enjoyed hearing when his true intentions are unmasked.
Below is a list of my favorite songs:

1. Do You Want to Build a Snowman?: Beautifully evokes Anna's loneliness and Elsa's fears.
2. Hans of the Southern Isles: Both renditions of this song are excellent.
3. Dangerous to Dream: A poignant song for Elsa as she is being crowned queen. Can she live up to the tremendous role being placed upon her, or will her hidden secrets destroy all?
4. What Do You Know About Love?: Anna and Christoff's duet as they set out in pursuit of Elsa. Funny and poignant. I have listened to this one over and over again.
5. Let It Go: A much better rendition than in the movie, sung softly at first then rising to an inspiring crescendo.
6. Fixer-Upper: Fun and terrific!
7. True Love: My favorite new song by far! A true depiction of the end of innocence. I truly relate to Anna in this song.
8. Colder by the Minute: Phenomenal song in which to set the climax of the story.

Frozen is a riveting soundtrack. I was immersed in the songs, and you will be as well. This soundtrack is a true homage to one of the most complex Disney stories ever created. Happy listening, and God bless you all.

That was the promo that was used with a sticker on the front of the CD that I purchased. That made me wonder if I was going to like the stage version of the movie. The movie obviously had some nice songs, but the movie CD was not all that exciting. When the show was represented only by two of the original movie songs on the Tony Awards, I was unimpressed.
Not to worry where the score for this show is concerned, though. This CD, and of course a number of the new songs, is terrific, possibly the best musical conversion of the material from a Disney musical movie to the stage. Hands down this would have my Tony Awards vote for best score, from which you would conclude that I prefer lush large-scale music to the intimate sound from a show such as “The Band’s Visit”. The use of chorus and children is particularly noteworthy at the beginning of the score, which truly shines until the reindeer has to start singing. Small complaint, this is a Disney musical on Broadway that you will want to know and see. Buy the CD or the online version!

Didn't even know that it had been made into a Broadway musical! Inspired me to see the touring company when they were in Los Angeles. I deducted a star for two reason: 1) At the end of the CD is a bonus track that was cut from the original production. It would have been nice if they'd inserted the song into the timeline, rather than tacking it on at the end; 2) The touring company sang a completely different song than in the production in place of the reprise to "For the First Time in Forever." The song was "I Can't Lose You," and it was absolutely beautiful. Totally wish that had been on the CD! Otherwise, a natural purchase for Frozen Fans.

I love this CD, and listen to it over and over again. First time I heard Frozen was headed to Broadway, and there would be new songs! I was so excited. Still delighted over it. The only thing I would change about this album is they left out a few songs I would have loved to see included. One is the song Hans sings in the moment he betrays Anna, and the other is a much fan-desired reprise of "Do You Want to Build a Snowman" sung by Elsa while Anna is frozen. But the songs we do have are absolutely flawless. My particular favorites are "A little bit of You, a little bit of Me", "Dangerous to Dream", "Monster", "True Love", and "Colder By the Minute" - but to top them all is the finale. What a perfect reprise to "Let it Go!" I still cry every time I listen.

There are only a few Broadway musicals made from movie musicals that I thought were even better than the movies (especially in terms of the music), in particular: Beauty and the Beast, Newsies, Anastasia.
