1) turn a natural talent into a strength
2) sharpen a non talent (she says this is the hard road, yet possible)
3) surround yourself with people who are better than you at your non talents
I love this view. Especially #3 because I'm so DIY focused all the time. Or I "can" learn something, so I'll take 14x longer than someone who does it brilliantly and lose all of those hours I could have been in my zone. She helps you see the opportunity cost of that habit. She also combines strengths with morals and values, which I don't see much of. She even ties it back to standards like Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, and as you can guess, she suggests you can reach the coveted "Self Actualization" through this 4 step process of tapping into your strengths. It's a tall order, and I say "yes!" let's get people aligned to the huge goal of self actualization rather than the low bar of just wishing they didn't hate their job.
"You’ve tried to fit all the pieces of the complicated puzzle together to be successful, to maximize your potential…yet you have not yet succeeded. How can this be? Every self help book you’ve read, every plan you’ve followed…so you come to the conclusion that it must be YOU. That you are somehow flawed."
The life-changing part of this book is that Alissa shows you how it’s NOT you. We are programmed to work on our flaws. Every time we get a negative performance review, we focus on making weaknesses into a strengths. But true mastery comes from accepting your flaws, finding people who are really good at the things you’re not so good at, and then freeing yourself to be frickin' awesome at your natural strengths.
Alissa's book helped me do this through the exercises. It's great to read books that give you advice, but so much better when they take the extra step, as Alissa does, to help you actually do something. I loved the exercises, which helped me get clear about what my values are and how to best leverage them in my life and my work.
The author provides a practical guide to realize your own awesomeness by utilizing your strengths (identified through the Strengths Finder 2.0 process - backed by science!). She provides a simple and repeatable process for optimum results. Eloquent examples of how she uses her strengths to improve results are also presented.
There are also lots of extra nuggets of knowledge wealth sprinkled throughout.
