In Fugitive Arms Mass Market Paperback – June, 1995
Jailed for crimes he did not commit, Logan Swan is a prisoner on the planet Sentra. In a daring escape, he takes Corporal Shenda Ridell prisoner the daughter of the powerful Commissioner of Interstellar Affairs and fiancé to the Commissioner of Justice, Darren Marnier. Her association with these two men makes her a very useful prisoner, and a very attractive one, too. In a race against time, Logan must locate a stolen artifact that may be able to save his life before it is too late. Shenda Ridell takes her duties as a Legionnaire seriously. Angry at being held prisoner, her first thought is on escape. Although she doesn't believe Logan's claims of innocence at first, she realizes it is in her best interests to help him clear his name. She is not formally engaged to Marnier and is surprised that he has announced their engagement. She does not know why he is so insistent on marrying her and until she finds out his ulterior motives, an alliance with Logan seems the safest course of action. Across space, Logan and Shenda travel in search of the stolen statue and proof that Marnier is behind the crimes Logan was accused of. Their attraction is more than physical and despite their mistrust of one another, the bond between them grows into a force more powerful than anything they could ever imagine.Christine Michels is a master in the exciting genre of futuristic romance! For once I'd like to see desire sparked because of something other than her striking coloring, his huge biceps, his manly chin, etc. This book lacks imagination and plot structure -- and get a proofreader, people - a few typos and word usages were embarrassing.
They fall into lust too quickly, easily, and inexplicably, and the plot points are just incidental. The best stuff isn't even touched upon (like the crystal - apparently a sufficient number of pages had been reached, so time to punch the time clock on this one), loose ends (like her son) are left dangling, and legal complications (like his and her fugitive status and the disappearance of her nemesis) just fade away like morning mist and don't even need to be mentioned in passing. Why? Because who cared about the plot, anyway? We just want them to see each other, pant, fall into bed, adventure, adventure, pant again... repeat. Yawn.
