On the eve of WWII, three art students let their professional rivalries and romantic jealousies catapult them into the center of one of the most notorious campaigns of the Third Reich. Upon arriving in Paris, American expat Julian is immediately befriended by Rene and Felix, who encourage him to abandon his formal studies and join them in private lessons with an avant-garde artist. Fiercely competitive, Rene and Felix nonetheless set aside their artistic ambitions for their passionate pursuit of Charlotte, the salon’s hedonistic nude model. When Felix discovers Rene and Charlotte’s affair, his vow to seek revenge is conveniently satisfied when his Nazi-sympathizer father forces him to return to Germany, where Felix becomes involved in the führer’s campaign to rid the world of so-called degenerate art. Thrust into the role of both confidant and spy, Julian dedicates his life to saving valuable works of art from Nazi destruction, with tragic results. Masterfully conceived and crafted, Barr’s dazzling debut novel has it all: passion and jealousy, intrigue and danger. --Carol Haggas --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

The story sucked me in with its beautiful prose and held my attention...from the prologue to the final satisfying moments when the story comes full circle.
The story covers romance, art, politics, deception, revenge, betrayal, loyalty... a little bit of everything... but most of all it's about about cross-cultural friendship bonded by a love for art, focusing on the rivalry between Rene Levi and Felix Von Bredow, and the role of mediator played by Julian Klein.
I was there "in the moment" witnessing the drama unfold amongst the 20-something-year-old artists who have varying artistic talent.
I was there "in the moment " experiencing the conflict and turmoil of love won and lost as their lives intertwine and destinies are shaped by the presence of two women, Adrienne and Charlotte.
I was there "in the moment" relishing the artwork portrayed via sensuous and vivid descriptive writing.
Passion burns brightly, risks are taken, choices are made - all in the name of art and friendship. Some of these choices have far-reaching and devastating effects on their lives.
Unforgettable and highly recommended!!
If I had my way, I'd give it 8 to 10 stars!!
But the setting is just one aspect of this novel that will demand your respect and attention. Barr’s characters are as passionate as the paintings they create—the American, Julian, the German, Felix and the most talented in the group, Rene. Add two daunting females for the men to fight over—Rene’s girlfriend, Adrienne, and the beautiful artist’s model, Charlotte, and you have all the ingredient’s for a story filled with desire, deception and love.
This fast-paced novel with plenty of twists will keep you turning the pages well past your bedtime.
