(1) The bad guys are so stupid. When a fingerprint analyst (Larry Hodgeson) decides to confess that he accepted a bribe to lie under oath about fingerprints in a meth lab, the bad guys (including the crooked sheriff) worry that his recanted testimony will trigger retrials in other cases they're involved in, so they decide to kill Hodgeson before he can confess. Do they bury his body where it can't be found? Nope. They shoot him and leave his body on Saddle Horn Ridge, where it's stuck in a crevasse but visible. (How did the body end up in the crevasse to begin with, and why? We're never told.)
(2) When our hero (Eric) goes climbing on the ridge with Randy (the no-good brother of Sarah, our heroine), the sheriff and his cohorts fatally shoot Randy, who was planning to blackmail them for killing Hodgeson. The sheriff accuses Eric of killing Randy, so Eric and Sarah join forces to prove his innocence. (Eric and Sarah's romance takes a back seat to the main story.)
(3) Eric and Sarah are fugitives on the run, and here's where things become totally implausible as they search for the truth. They subdue and handcuff the sheriff when he comes to Sarah's ranch. Taking an ATV belonging to the ranch foreman, they go to Saddle Horn Ridge and discover Hodgeson's body. One of Eric's boots gets stuck in the crevasse. The bad guys are shooting at them, so Eric leaves his boot and runs many miles with Sarah through rough terrain, wearing only a sock on one of his feet. "They hiked over ridges and down steep slopes." And Sarah is pregnant, too! Are they superhuman, or what?
(4) They decide to go to a rodeo in Cody, thirty miles away. Do they walk? Nope. They just happen to see a man at a ranch who just happens to be loading a horse into a trailer bound for the rodeo, so they climb in. At the rodeo, they just happen to see a motor home with no one inside, so they go in and just happen to find a perfect pair of boots for Eric. They just happen to meet a man who knew Larry Hodgeson and also knows Hodgeson's wife, who just happens to work at the rodeo.
(5) Running from rodeo security, Eric and Sarah just happen to find food and shelter in a restaurant that's closed for renovation. Hours later, some young people enter the restaurant and just happen to leave their SUV parked outside with the engine running. Eric and Sarah steal the SUV and go to the local library, where they just happen to find articles linking Hodgeson to other cases involving our bad guys. Presto! The dangling plot threads magically come together.
(6) All of these lucky happenstances were way too contrived and improbable for me, and it only gets worse. Eric and Sarah hide out at the cabin of a friend who just happens to be gone, and they enjoy a bit of steamy sex. There's a final confrontation with the bad guys, during which the sheriff describes all of their nefarious deeds in detail. While he stands around stupidly bragging, Eric gets a chance to save Sarah and vanquish the bad guys.
This final confrontation includes a surprising revelation I never saw coming, which manages to raise my rating to two stars overall. Will I be reading more books in this series? Not a chance!
I enjoyed this character-driven plot with a theme of betrayal versus trust. I liked how Ms. Patterson wove in motivating forces of greed, corruption, and abuse of power to move her plot along. I enjoyed Sarah and Eric’s quest as they hunted for truth behind the murders of Randy and the others. Ms. Patterson’s characters, both primary and secondary were well-designed and multi-layered. I appreciated Ms. Patterson’s use of descriptive language. Her picturesque nature scenes were realistic while her action scenes were riveting. I liked how she wrapped all details up in her epilogue. Nice job, Ms. Patterson.
Packed with intense action and tension, I haven't read as good a thriller as this in a very long time.

Eric’s friend Randy is shot dead while the are out rock climbing and he narrowly escaped the same fate. Not having a clue at what has happened he runs to check in on randys sister and finds her held against her will by the town sheriff. On the run and trying to put the pieces together it’s a race against time for them to find out what has happened.
The suspense here was palpable. I loved the very descriptive climbing scenes, as a learner climber made me be able to view everything clearly.
Eric wasn’t my normal type of book hero. A bit too out of tune with his emotional side. But he got his head out his backside eventually. All in all really good
