Top customer reviews
In this digital age, I can understand the appeal of a photo that has only one copy, that you share physically with one person, that cannot be recreated if lost, and most importantly, is private and cannot be shared with the world at large (unless you take a digital picture of the photo). Kudos to Fujifilm for bringing back the old Polaroid technology and making it new again for teenagers that never grew up with Polaroids!
This little camera is an upgrade on the Mini 8. It makes some nice updates like a better design and automatic exposure for better pictures.
The main feature of this camera is a Selfie mode. It has a little mirror by the lens that can be used to check the framing of the shot and adjusts the focus and exposure to take the best selfie. The exposure is also automatic which now captures the subject and the background. The Mini 8 would make the subjects really bright while darkening the background for relatively dark photos. There were also mirror accessories available on Amazon to take selfies. Fujifilm solved that problem by putting a tiny mirror near the lens although it's tinier than the accessory products. Indoor photos are so much better with this camera. My daughter calls the prints "art", they look like Instagram pics in physical form.
Other modes on this camera are the ‘Self-timer’ for group shots or just taking pictures of yourself doing something. There is a tripod socket on the camera, so you can definitely set a self-timer and pose. Perhaps, this will bring back the naughty instant pictures couples would take to share just with each other!
There is a ‘Macro’ mode for close-up shots which is useful for capturing closeups of flora or fauna or just yourself - for distances from 1 to 2 feet. There is also a ‘Landscape’ mode for landscape pictures. I'd rather use my DSLR for landscape shots, but I can see the charm of taking an instant shot to capture a special moment at a special place. There is also a Hi-Key mode for brightening up your subject and also a fill-in flash option for the same thing on really bright days, when the subject appears darker.
The shutter button is placed at a spot that's optimum for selfies but for typical view finder picture taking it can feel a little strange. The camera is also as heavy as a DSLR almost as all the processing is in the camera. However, it's not as heavy as those old polaroid cameras, after all it takes mini shots.
This camera runs on 2 CR-2 batteries, and also uses the Fujifilm Mini Instax film. Buy the twin pack with 20 sheets from Amazon, as it's reasonably priced for about $0.75 per picture.
Taking pictures with this camera is addictive. It's like eating chocolate, you can't stop at one and soon you've gone through the pack of 10. Also, just like chocolate, these prints are best when you're sharing the moment with someone. This is the perfect gift for someone who has everything.
They weigh about the same to be honest. The printer may weigh slightly more as there are more moving parts involved. I weighed them to be about 10 Oz. Or roughly the weight of a half full water bottle. Heavier than a regular banana. :)
About the size:
Still a bit bulky but will fit in a fanny pack or purse. The design is sleek so I don't feel silly busting it out during occasions.
VS the mini 8:
I spent a lot of time debating which camera to get. In the end it came down to style and efficiency. I anticipate a lot of bad shots using the mini 8. And at roughly 80 cents a shot you will eventually reach the price of a mini 70. The mini 70 also has automatic exposure control and a selfish mode with mirror, so you have less of a chance of messing up your shot. The design of the mini 8 is perfect for teenagers or college students. If you are a male or feel a little too old to bust out what looks like a toy, I'd go with the 70 or 90 even.
It all comes down to use. A camera is good for capturing moments on the spot. The printer would be good for the scrapbooker or to hand out as a gift. Although the instax share app does give you the option to print directly, it is still not as satisfying as printing it instantaneously from the camera.
The battery :( cr2 is a weird battery choice but there are rechargeable options that hold less power. If you you want to be green, you're going to to want to spend the extra 15 to 20 dollars on rechargeable batteries. The mini 70 allows for about 30 shots on cr2 batteries.
5 stars. Because purchasing a mini 70 means you did your research and know what you want and what you will get from the device. It is more of an investment than purchasing a mini 8 for half the cost. Buy it for yourself or the friend/family you know will appreciate a sleek design vs a toy.
