From the manufacturer
The weather-resistant zoom lens XF16-55mm F2.8 R LM WR is a flagship "XF standard zoom lens" with a focal length equivalent to 24mm* to 84mm*, and a constant F2.8 aperture throughout the range. The advanced optical design controls various forms of aberration to achieve edge-to-edge sharpness across the entire zoom range.
Feature Flagship Standard Zoom
Optically designed to draw out the maximum image quality
In order to achieve the best-in-class image quality, the fast standard zoom lens with a constant aperture of F2.8 consists of 17 elements in 12 groups. This includes three aspherical lens elements to control spherical aberration and distortion, and three ED glass lens elements to reduce lateral chromatic aberration (wide-angle) and axial chromatic aberration (telephoto), thereby achieving edge-to-edge sharpness across the entire zoom range.
Nine rounded aperture blades create a smooth, circular bokeh. The suppression of spherical aberration to the ultimate extent contributes to produce beautiful bokeh at both the front and back.
Nano-GI (Gradient Index) Coating Technology
Applying Fujifilm's unique HT-EBC (High Transmittance Electron Beam Coating) to the entire area of the lens surface ensures ghosting and flare are controlled for sharp, clear images. Also, using the newly developed Nano-GI (Gradient Index) coating technology, which alters the refractive index between glass and air, ghosting and flare are effectively reduced for diagonal incident light.
High-speed, quiet auto focus thanks to the Linear Motor
By reducing the weight of the focus lens and mounting the Twin Linear Motor, high-speed, quiet AF is possible. The fastest AF speed of 0.06 seconds brings comfort to your photo-shoot when by combining this lens with an X Series camera body* offering Phase Detection AF. Combined with the near-silent shutter sound, photos can be taken unnoticed in quiet locations.
Weather resistant, dust-resistant and -10°C low-temperature operation
By applying seals to each portion of the barrel, the lens is weather-resistant, dust-resistant and -10°C low-temperature operation, making it the perfect companion for the FUJIFILM X-T1, which has the same levels of protection.

One really minor nitpick is that when you use the pop-up style flash that came with the X-T1, the lens hood casts a shadow at the bottom of the frame, especially when zoomed out to 16mm. Common problem with longer lenses, but easily remedied by temporarily removing the lens hood; this solves the problem.
For the performance that this lens it gives, it's well worth the price! If anything ever happened to this lens, would I get another one? Yeah, you betcha!
This would be a close second to the 23mm 1.4 for a walk-around lens. When I tested them out side-by-side, I just kept going back to the primes; not something I experienced when I had my nikon gear (I chose the 24-70mm 80% of the time over my 35mm despite the extreme weight differential and faster aperture). The fact that this lens doesn't have IS definitely was a factor as much as its weight. The construction of the lens was solid as with other Fuji lenses, although I don't know why they couldn't get the zooming to not be visibly noticeable from the outside like the 50-140mm (it's just an aesthetic thing).
Somehow this is still quite a bit better. It should be for the price, but it somehow creates images and has a feel that makes you forget how much it costs. The 16mm wide end is very very nice. Honestly that's the biggest plus for me. f2.8 is great to have throughout, but the x system does well at medium ISOs and I use a flash indoors, so I'm not often shooting at f2.8 (plus I also have the 56 f1.2 for those moments), likewise the all weather build, while an upgrade, wasn't exactly a weekness of the earlier lens, though you can definitely tell the difference. It's all of the incremental updates, plus the 16mm wide end that make this a remarkably better lens than the already amazing 18-55 lens. I sold my 18-55mm lens to focus on primes (specifically the 27mm, 35mm, and 56mm primes plus Zeiss 12mm), and I appreciated the upgrade in contrast and sharpness that the primes afforded. Here you can have the sharpness and contrast with convenience of the zoom.
It's not perfect, as it doesn't have OS (supposedly due to sharpness at the wide end) and it's rather big. It's also significantly heavier than my Tamron 24-70VC (for Nikon, but a similar type of lens). Premium build and feel is wonderful, but a 2+ lb lens does get old rather fast.
All in all, try the 18-55 f2.8-4.0 first. It's 99% the lens this is and weighs 1/3 as much. If you've tried that and want to go wider or want that last bit of sharpness and contrast, you won't be disappointed.
