I held off buying the 'normal' edition of FMJ for the very reason that I wanted a widescreen version. The Amazon specifications for the Limited Edition clearly state:
"Color, Closed-captioned, Widescreen, Box set"
After, pre-ordering, and waiting months and months, I finally received my Limited Edition yesterday. And guess what?
It's still NOT WIDESCREEN!
I'm highly disappointed that I was mislead on the feature set. If you want a widescreen version of FMJ, don't buy the Limited Edition, despite what the specifications say.

This DVD is of inferior quality to the one I bought some fifteen years ago. This one is no wider (though it touts itself as widescreen edition) It is very dark almost impossible to watch and has motion glitches throughout with pixilated stoppages also. The worst part is that you can never know if there is a problem until you open it up and (try) to watch it, which renders it ineligible for return !! I'll not be shopping at amazon anymore since you cannot return defective merchandise.

I can't say enough about one of my all time favorite movies, this with Apocalypse Now are the top 2 Vietnam movies for sure. I love Kubrick and I love this movie, needless to say I was very disappointed in this DVD translation. I have to say this HD DVD was an extreme letdown for me. This was the first HD DVD I bought, so I was ready to take the player back when I watched it the first time. I even applied a patch to my player and watched it again but that didn't help either. The graininess was almost unbearable for me, very disappointing. Some standard DVDs look as good or better in my opinion. If this is as good as it gets on HD DVD, I see why Blu-ray will win for sure. A decent HD cable channel blows it away for richness of color and definition. Don't waste your money on this and don't invest in a lot of HD DVDs, Stanley Kubrick must be doing somersaults in his grave!

The film is excellent, the "Deluxe Widescreen Edition" DVD (the non-Blu-Ray version) is not. I purchased the first copy and it skipped, froze, and would not play the end sections of the bootcamp sequence. Seller sent me another copy and it did the same thing. Problem occurs on two separate DVD players.

Another customer wrote a 1 star review in June 2012 detailing the same problem & experience. Likely the manufacturing run of these DVD discs is faulty. And most or all of the discs available at Amazon sellers will have this problem.

If you buy the Deluxe Widescreen Edition (non-Blu-Ray) and it freezes/skips/etc. save your time and money and return it for a refund. Hopefully in a year or two the sellers will have returned all the mis-manufactured discs and a new printing will have occured.

Full Metal Jacket is one of the all time American movie classics. I have wanted a copy on Blu-ray forever, so imagine my total let down when I played this for the first time and found my copy has the worst sound levels you can imagine. The picture is super crisp and without flaw but I had to run the volume up to 70 just to hear the dialog. All those years wasted waiting for the best quality and the copy I have had for 10 years is still better to watch. I do hope that mine is an isolated copy because this classic deserves better.

One star rating is not for the movie. I like the movie, being an early 70's former Marine, 3rd Batt. Boot Camp and served with 2/5. I received the first copy and noticed a number of spots during playback that looked like someone had tried to unplug the video cable, it was just a brief bright flash and than normal play. I have other Blu-ray movies that play without problems. I returned the movie and another copy was quickly sent. The second copy arrived and the case did not have the normal stickers that need to be removed in order to open the case. The shrink wrap also did not look like it had been done at the factory, but by a kid with a hair dryer. Was this a returned copy? I played the movie and it was worse than the first. I counted thirty spots where the movie had brief flashes which started in Boot Camp on the grinder. The flashes became worse after Tet in the movie, it looked like a colorized bar code. I requested a third copy ( this is how much I enjoy the movie) be sent and Amazon said no problem. One day later, Big Problem. In Amazon's words, "I'm sorry to hear the replacement DVD had the same problem as your first order. This usually doesn't happen. Since it's likely another replacement would arrive defective, I won't trouble you with another replacement." Save yourself time and frustration and wait a few months, Amazon might get better copies of the movie.

This is a five-star film distributed in a zero-star format. Regardless of the tangled history behind the decision to release the film this way for home video before the advent of widespread widescreen television (see the JT comment at http://www.amazon.com/review/R2WRJVNJJXV7IT/ref=cm_cr_dp_cmt?ie=UTF8&ASIN=B000P0J09C&nodeID=2625373011&store=movies-tv#wasThisHelpful), Stanley Kubrick's shot composition does not deserve the kind of treatment Michaelangelo's La Pieta sculpture got from the maniac who took a hammer to it. Note that this crucial "modified to fit your screen" factor is left off the basic product description, nor will you find it on the cover or spine of this unit. The widescreen version is now available, so do yourself and the film a favor and spurn this damaged version. Maybe Warner Bros. will see the light and withdraw it from distribution.

Well it only costs $7ish for the Blue Ray disk, and Amazon shipped fast and good as usual. That is about all I can say that is good about this one. I love Lee Ermey, have read his book which I like - and this is why I bought this ...but this movie really blows. There is no morally redeeming value to it in any sense. If you are looking for a tale of valor, or even something half way interesting (unless you find suicides, mercy killings, military screw ups, whores, pointless military maneuvers, and such like fun) look elsewhere. Foul mouthed Marine boot camp drill work is one thing, but ends with a section 8 blowing away the DI (Ermey) then himself. How wonderfully fulfilling and uplifting! It does not get better - pretty soon you wish the power would go out or the disk would self destruct like the section 8 did. It drones on...following the troops over to Nam with the star - a screwed up half peace-nick reporter-marine as the main star. Following random pointless fire-fights, several troop encounters with a hooker, ending with a fouled up mission getting a few men being blown away by a local gal sniper whom they finally shoot - the dull too long running scene where they all surround the mortally wounded sniper and the star finally pulling the trigger for the life ending Coup De Grace shot is supposed to be some "Oh Wow" moment but is less uplifting than looking at the dump you just finished before flushing it away. In a way this scene is sort of like what you will do: toss the blue ray disk and cover in the garbage and just figure that you wasted your time and only have a blue ray disk case to show for your $7 - well at least Ermey gets some of it, but frankly I would recommend just buying a second copy of his book and giving it away ...then at least then you would feel you are doing something half way good. Rated 1-Star only because 0-Star's is not an option.
