My Kubrick's favorite movie, and arguably, one of the best war movies of all time. I watched this movie at least 10 times, when I was an adolescent first, and then as an adult man. It always moves me to the unspeakable, and I've grown up very fond of it, its story, and most of all, its characters. This is easily among my top 20 favorite movies of all time. The bluray version looks absolutely great, the best possible, at least in my 65 inch screen!

This is more about the BD quality than the movie itself. This version is substantially better than the bluray 2006 release, which didn't look much more than an upconverted DVD.

The sound quality is superior to DVD, in clarity and dynamic range. You can switch to PCM audio to further improve the sound's dynamic range even more. The transfer has much more vibrant colors and the images are sharper and finely detailed, making the BD purchase more worthwhile over the DVD.

I have read that Kubrick started working on this project well before "Platoon", as a master craftsman he took years to get where he wanted before filming began. This film, unlike the other films about Vietnam starts with recruits in Parris Island, being molded into the perfect Marines. I found this film spartan and cold (that can be said of any Kubrick film, except Spartacus), and yet darkly humorous, (particularly R Lee Ermey's Drill Instructor whipping the recruits into fighting shape.) Kubrick to me brought more of a detached view to war than any other director out there. (See "Paths of Glory" an indictment of French leadership in the 1st World War)

The transfer was excellent, the sound and picture as I remember seeing them on the big screen. 5 Stars.

Very good movie by Stanley Kubrick's same director or producer that made Clockwork Orange.

Not an easy film to watch but it is gripping and worth the brutality in this film.
