I had to originally learn cryptography out of a book with a lot of theory but almost no code.
Dennis has an excellent methodology of teaching cryptography in this book by providing you the fundamentals of a given crypto methodology, why it is important in an enterprise security application context, and then gives you code that isn't overly complex to really drive home the concept!
I think his methodology is very effective and it's how I wish I was taught in my cryptography class instead of having to browse StackOverflow for the code tidbits I needed. Recommend for any crypto beginner!
