Product Description
Innocence and flesh were sacrificed when two young brothers ignored the laws of Alchemy in an attempt to resurrect their mother. The horrors they recklessly unleashed that night marked the beginning of a journey that leads from darkness to light and back.
In an era of war and corruption, State Alchemist Edward Elric and his brother Alphonse desperately search for the Philosopher’s Stone. The legendary artifact is their last hope to restore what was lost – or it could be their undoing. The grisly truths found in the quest for the relic will test their souls in ways unimaginable. Murder stalks the brothers from the shadows and false prophets conspire to steal their faith. Morality is assaulted by military atrocities and scientific abominations. Amid the ashes of their childhood, Edward and Alphonse will discover the power to create is but a breath away from the power to destroy. The bond of brotherhood will be their greatest weapon in the fight for their lives.

The only thing I thought was a little weird was the wrapping. As seen in the first photo, the wrapping was kind of loose, so maybe it had been opened before and then re-wrapped? The box had a big piece of sticky tape/glue or something on the top (seen in the last photo), and there was small bits of what seemed to be dried glue on random parts of the box. They were tiny specks though and scraped off easily. Everything inside the box was in brand new condition though, and the discs were in proper wrapping.
Everything inside was in great condition though, and it included everything that it claimed it would.

If you've ever purchased a DVD or Blu-ray before, you'll be happy to know that this product is no different.
The case is a hard sturdy material yet removing the DVD's from the cases may be a problem as you have to press down firmly on the middle 'button' with your thumb and use your remaining fingers to carefully lift the DVD from the insert. That can be a problem with many DVD's however, it is also a good thing as you can rest assured that the disc will not become dislodged within the case due to the sturdy holding.
The artwork presented on the cover (as you see from the picture) is nostalgic for all Full Metal Alchemist fans. You will find the two main characters presented on the covers (slipcover/case). It is highly detailed and on the back of the case are the general descriptions and blurbs of the television show including the special features and what else you can come to expect from the DVD's themselves.
The DVD's have artwork of their own which are symbolic of the show: (a red) Alchemy transmutation circle.
When you insert the DVD/Blu-ray into your compatible player whether it's a Playstation or XBOX console, PC, etc., you will be confronted with various anime trailers before getting to home menu. On the menu, you will have a static screen with familiar music as the background (original song from FMA original soundtrack). You will be able to choose between subtitles, Japanese/English voice audio and a textless opening among other things. There's isn't much that 'stand out' about this product but whether you're new to the series or a longtime fan, I'd recommend adding this to your collection (with such a reasonable price)! While this is the series that diverged from the path the manga was headed, I do recommend checking out the second of this series: Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood which follows the manga plot intently.
I watched the show alongside my brother, and we could relate well to the Elrics. My brother, both older and smaller than I, had a quick temper, much like Ed, whereas I more easily identified Al. We both were young in our teenage years, emerging from a childhood where we too had lost a parent. We were no strangers to difficult times, no paucity of adversity in our lives, and Ed and Al helped us to feel less alone in our struggles. Much in the same way they studied their alchemy, we were inspired to pursue the sciences. Ed and Al taught us not just to be better brothers to one another, but to be better people in general. This show is chock full of good messages and good philosophy. It molded me as a youth, it shaped my understanding of consequence, and helped me come to terms with some of life's hard truths. It sounds silly, to be so affected by a television show, but I would say it's similar to the feeling you get when a certain song moves your soul, and I would challenge anyone who says there is nothing to be learned here.
This show exemplifies the finest of storytelling. I feel sorry for those that would, so to speak, judge this book by its cover. This is not simply some cartoon for children, this show is a life lesson, and it can change you for the better if you let it. I am glad for the opportunity to buy a remastered copy. It will make a good gift to my brother. Hopefully someday his kids and my kids will be able to enjoy this show on the same level as we did.

First lets start off with something you absolutely need to know if you are considering picking up this series: as I am writing this review Funimation's license is set to expire in a month, meaning that this set will go out of print. The good news is that Aniplex is going to rescue the series. The bad news is that Aniplex is very much a company that caters to the hardcore collectors. So if you wait to buy it from them its going to cost you about $400 dollars or more. And that's just for the first TV series. Assuming you would also want to get the 2 movies, the remake series and the 2 OVAs (if Aniplex even bothers to release the OVAs) you're looking to spend at least $1000. So if you're looking at this listing in July or August of 2016, buy this immediately.
And now for the review:
Series= 10/10
This series is an absolute classic. Something that this series does incredibly well, in fact I'd say its one of the things FMA is known for, is its characters. You really get to know them well throughout its 51 episode run. You really get connected to them, and darn does this show ever bring on "the feels" whenever something bad happens to them (and this show really likes to kick its characters in the emotional gut). I don't want to go into too many details as far as plot because you can find that info pretty much anywhere and saying anything more would be in spoiler territory. Buy this if it sounds interesting to you. It is well worth the money.
Blu-Ray: 7/10
The first FMA series began airing in 2003 and although it does show its age the animation is still very impressive for the time. To date, there has not been a blu-ray released in Japan. This means that Funimation had to go about restoring this using their own materials. As a result of this, each episode is presented in a 4:3 aspect ratio. That personally doesn't bother me, since the alternative isn't much better (nobody wants Dragonball Z's fake widescreen that just zooms in and cuts off 20% of the image) but people should still keep this in mind. The big thing with this release, however, is the picture quality. While it certainly does look good, its only a little better than the dvds. Because blu-ray disks can hold more memory than dvds (aka: they can hold more episodes) this is really more of a space saver than an upgrade. If you have the chance to buy the dvd for much cheaper I'd say go ahead.
Amazon experience; 5/10
This was the worst experience with Amazon I have ever had. When I first ordered this blu-ray I was told it would ship on Tuesday (I forget what date). Tuesday came and went and it still had not shipped. Wednesday passed and still nothing. I decided to give it one more day before I would contact them. I logged in the next day and it had finally shipped. I have no problem if my order is delayed. Sometimes things happen that are out of their control and I totally get that. But why was I not notified when my order was delayed for 2 days? I never received an email with an apology or explanation. Amazon never even acknowledged it.
Ok my order had shipped and was now on its way. It was now in my mailbox and all was good, right? Wrong. As soon as I took off the plastic I realized that the blu-ray case was broken in several places, with the pieces rattling around inside. I gathered all the pieces that had broken off and I checked the disks and there did appear to be some superficial scratches. Not only that, but there were other damaged areas of the case where the pieces could potentially fall off in the future and scratch the disks. I wasn't going to take the chance and immediately requested a replacement. I'll give Amazon some credit here: they were quick to fulfill my request.
The next week I got my replacement and, once again, the case was damaged. Though this time it was significantly less damaged than the first one. The bottom corner had broken off, but it didn't seem like it had moved at all during transportation. Another issue, although this one isn't Amazon's fault I assume, was that the magnetic security strip had been placed under a disk, which left some minor scratches. I tested the disk and luckily it played without any issues. I decided to keep this one because the disks still worked and I could always replace the case. However, I still wish Amazon had handled my order with a little more care.
Final Comments: For those debating the price while it may seem like a lot to spend for a show, per episode, it is cheaper than most $60 limited edition boxsets on the market (at the time of this review). If you collect anime and are a fan of this show, you will not regret this purchase.
