The lamp is very self explanatory you don't even need to read the manual. There's a button that says "DISPLAY", guess what it does? It turn the display on/off (isn't that great), another "ALARM", and in the other arm it have "+", "-". And in the back there's a "audio In" input (I hope this is self explanatory too).
The clock functions good, for daylight display is ok, for night you can turn if off. The alarm is in a moderate level for a child. The main idea was that my 11 year old start being responsable for his wake up time (either way I have my own alarm a few minutes apart to check if he heard the alarm). The lamp manufacturer recomends a 25W bulb, if you need a brighter light as we did, put a CFL 14W equivalent to 60W normal bulb (if you need more light than 60W for a nightlight, you are not a child and you need to check your eyes).
The volume for the audio in input is ok for a child's room (if you're looking for HIFI audio for your IPOD, go look for something not in the shape of a lamp), the only drawback I could identify is that you can't control the audio from the lamp, it should be controlled from your audio source, but that's fine for my son. IMO if your child is into the STAR WARS dimension, the lamp is great just great, he/she will spend hours just to contemplate it. I would say it was money well spend.
I use this in my office instead of the bright overhead florescent lights. I do like the brightness of the clock, because I can easily see the time from anywhere in my office. The brightness of the clock is also about the same LED brightness that glows from my external HDs and router, so it really doesn't bother me. The overall lighting of the lamp is a soft glow, mainly because it uses a 25 watt bulb and Vader's head is black.
BUT, the compliments I get from my co-workers is well worth the money and I get comments from everyone that visits my office about how cool it is.
I say go for it if you want to add coolness to your space, but don't buy it if it's going to be your primary wake-up alarm clock or your room clock.
It seems durable and appropriate for a child's room. The only educational value would be the clock and I guess how it will spark his imagination. I hope it holds up well. Yes, I would buy it again. It is very cute and I don't even like Star Wars.
Who cares that it only takes a 25 watt light bulb? Look at the thing, it's not like you could possibly expect to light a whole room with that size lamp anyway. But here's the thing: the look and awesomeness of the lamp make up for any imagined deficits one things the lamp has.
Get it. You won't be sorry. It's amazing.
