Her instincts place her at the center of a plot involving a frightening new kind of terrorism—financial terrorism— perpetrated by a handsome Middle Eastern hedge fund mogul. His goal is to bring the global economy to its knees.
Kate’s mission takes her from D.C. to Venezuela, from Cuba to Connecticut. She must race to piece together this global puzzle…or risk the catastrophic destruction of the world’s financial markets.

Editorial Reviews
Review
“The Fund contains more geopolitical villainy than boardroom jousting…a sprawling book with bailout-size stakes: bomb plots, biological terrorism and attacks on the Federal Reserve.”
—The New York Times
"A financial apocalyptic thriller full of surprises and insider knowledge. A terrific read!"
—Douglas Preston, New York Times bestselling author of Impact
“A disturbing peek into the future… A cautionary tale and a wake-up call. Let’s hope it’s being read by the right people in Washington”.
—Nelson DeMille, New York Times bestselling author of The Lion
“The author’s skill in storytelling is evident from the first page and makes flipping each new page addictive. The climax and resolution hold a wealth of alarming surprises. The question may arise: How likely is the threat of this fictional story becoming tomorrow’s horrific headlines?”
—The Roanoke Times

So, we have OPEC countries wanting a higher oil price, anti-USA elements wanting to tear down the USA, Basques wanting to win freedom from Spain, Muslim militants wanting to spread their religion, and various people looking for an edge to obtain money by whatever means are available. It is the nature of things that when some people lose, other people win. It is hard to get behind the various characters in the book because who do you cheer for? You have Wall Street bankers looking to make profits at someone else's expense, and you have terrorists pitted against the bankers. In the end, maybe you can feel sorry for the apes of Gibraltar.
This is a world of double dealing, where you might get a knife in the back. Temporary allies may consider you expendable. In the wrap up, evil people seem to walk away clear, while other people get taken down (although it is hard to like some of those other people). There are many spear carriers killed along the way. Some misguided people, who think they are sacrificing themselves for Allah, may have had second thoughts if they had known the real intentions of their handlers.
Spoiler alert -- I can only give the book three stars, however, because:
1. After dragging the reader through three hundred pages focused on the creation of the Milestone Fund, the author does not address how the fund prospered via its partial purchase of a hedge fund that was exposed to markets that were crashing.
2. Separately, the dramatic ending of the story would never have happened as described... having been nuked, backup facility or not, the markets simply would not have opened for several days, and trading in the affected banks would have been halted for days until a government resolution could have been engineered.
3. The author never spends one word illustrating how, once events are set in motion, derivatives brought the system down. In fact, in the real world, the offsetting nature of derivative positions often net out to near zero. The Lehman and AIG wind-downs showed that derivative positions can be unwound with little or no impact on counter-parties who were usually adequately hedged. Which I guess is why he never described the financial aftermath of the terrorist strike.
Value investors alert -- At its current sub-$2 price, this book is a bargain. Well worth reading.
real threat to our country, one that is getting much attention in the news today.
A must read.
