About the Author
Keith Smith has been building mathematical models and making them understandable for 25 years. In spite of having an educational background that induces narcolepsy--Operations Research and Applied Statistics--some of his coworkers take the risk and voluntarily talk to him. He's also worked in a variety of areas throughout his career, including project management, process reengineering, and software design. Keith Smith is currently the Director of Education at HyPerformix.
Bob Wescott has been doing industrial-grade teaching, performance analysis, capacity planning and creating other merriment in the computer industry for the past 25 years. He has worked at more customer sites than he cares to count and racked up over a million air miles doing that. He currently lives in and consults part-time from his home in Vermont, where occasionally, he is honored to be one of the dedicated band of fanatics that give the tour at Ben & Jerry s Ice Cream. To begin with, this is AN INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY book! Because the title is about general performance, some reviews on the web ding it as being too specific-- I think the reader accidentaly thought it was a fluff piece on general performance of organizations. The definition of performance in IT goes all the way from registry loads in circuits to traffic loads on servers, including queueing, etc.
There even is a new job title called CDSO in many organizations (even small and medium)-- Chief Data Science Officer. This job starts in the mid 250's K US in many locations! Instead of preparing for that interview studying whiteboard coding of algos and DS hash tables, READ THIS BOOK! In "big" places like the interface between Stanford and Google, performance engineering (PE) is morphing into "operations management." That is MBA-speak for things like linear regressions, queueing theories, LIFO stacks vs. heaps explored mathematically comparing functional vs. imperative paradigms, etc. For most day to day Engineers and managers-- (don't get angry at me)-- this stuff is really not "real world" yet, and many of the books on it are, honestly, useless from an applied view! One Engineer laughed when I mentioned queueing theory, and said it comes down to the "back of the envelope ability to spot bottlenecks, intuitively and experientially, especially when integrating newer thread technologies with cantankerous old legacy systems."
Bottom line: this book IS real world. Yes, it gives the relevant math and formulas (the "timesaving analytical techniques" chapter on Little's Law /Utilization Law etc. is worth the price of the whole book by itself), but NOT in some ivory tower, theory of OR form that frankly is of little day to day use. Instead, this takes all that cutting edge research, and all those ivory tower techniques, and brings them down to the intelligent manager's level-- or the successful performance consultant's level. Knowing that average service time is the reciprocal of maximum throughput is intuitive, but doing the math directly can be a revelation.
With the hiring healthcare issues today, MANY important firms with dream jobs are "outsourcing" performance testing and even management to both consulting firms and independent contractors. READ THIS BOOK AND YOU'LL BE READY TO CHARGE $300 an hour US easily! You'll be able to design dashboards, solve sticky and challenging multi thread problems and help your company or customers really "get" performance management and engineering all the way from design to day to day monitoring. Most importantly, PE touches the HOTTEST career and consulting areas today-- ALL of them-- capacity planning in big data, efficiency and memory management in embedded (including a billion transistors and a million memory locations), queueing and sims for server warehouses (yes, this book covers both), and the sister discipline sploits and pen tests which is more and more being seen as a subset of performance engineering.
Highly recommended for all aspects of IT management, from electronics engineering and circuits to CTO's, and the best and brightest consultants and independent contractors in every area of IT. Significantly, even when dealing with "high" level software sims, stats, analytics, OR techniques, etc., the authors remember to put it in a form your HP-50 or Excel, or even a pencil and paper, can handle! Unique and important contribution to PE for real world IT managers, current and potential consultants, and yes, even lowly coders like yours truly working to expand their frames.
BTW-- GREAT GIFT for that student or tech jock in your life-- you WILL be appreciated for this one!
