Editorial Reviews

Review

"The Fungal Pharmacy is a great book for anyone interested in the medicinal properties of mushrooms. In this rapidly developing field, I am delighted to recommend this book to both amateurs and professionals. Robert Rogers has made a significant contribution … highly recommended!” —Paul Stamets, author of Mycelium Running

"Robert Rogers is amazingly knowledgeable of the mushrooms and other wild fungi of the Pacific Northwest , and eager to share his knowledge. Doctor, heal thyself—learn your mushrooms and get out into the woods!" —Britt Bunyard, publisher and editor-in-chief of Fungi magazine

“Robert's knowledge of plants and fungi can make one's head spin with medicinal, traditional, and culinary uses.” —Martin Osis, president of the Alberta Mycological Society

The Fungal Pharmacy is the first book in the field to attempt to understand the energetics and personality of the medicinal mushrooms rather than relying solely on their pharmacological profiles.  By 'energetics' I mean the basic pathological patterns of the mushroom, such as hot or cold, damp or dry.  By ‘personality’ I mean the indications peculiar to a mushroom that come from an intimate working knowledge of a medicine. This method represents the high road for the intuitive practitioner.” —Matthew Wood, author of The Earthwise Herbal

"An extensively researched and comprehensive synthesis of traditional knowledge and contemporary scientific data. An invaluable resource to anyone with an interest in traditional medicine or simply a fascination with lichens." —Heath O'Brien, PhD

"Packed with information, The Fungal Pharmacy is a 'must-read' for all who are interested in medicinal mushrooms. Highly readable, the book is useful for students, biologists, naturalists, and the general public. A most welcome addition to the field of ethnomycology.” —Roland Treu, associate professor, Athabasca University

“The Fungal Pharmacy is a 'must' reference for mycologists, mushroom hunters, and practitioners of natural health care. … Full color photos pack a survey of clinical studies, homeopathic uses, global folklore and cultural references, and more. [The Fungal Pharmacy] is the first book in the field that investigates the pathological patterns of medicinal mushrooms rather than their pharmacological profiles. … There's nothing as extensive currently in print." Midwest Book Review

Good
- beautiful pictures
- a lot of information from a wide range of sources, from scientific journals to folklore
- indexes and the charts in the back where the possible health benefits of several mushrooms are shown simply
- big bibliography of sources

Not so good
- All this info from assorted sources is just pasted together. We go from multiple, long, detailed chemical names, which only an organic chemist is likely to understand, to a statement about what fun the author had gathering this mushroom, to poems, to a rare recipe for a decoction or advice on a reasonable dose. A real hodgepodge.

I say, "An interesting jumping off place," because there are some solid clues about the medicinal properties of the mushrooms, that could spur someone to do more research. This book alone will not teach you to be either a good mushroom hunter or a good mushroom user. It does clearly show that further research into the pharmaceutical uses of mushrooms could give us some less-toxic alternatives to currently used chemo drugs and antibiotics.

If you are going to buy any one book on medicinal mushrooms, this is the one to get. I have multiple books on the subject and this book is by far the best. When I bought it, I thought the book would be over my head. Instead, I found it to be very easy reading.

How I feel about this book.

What an amazing resource. As a medical student focusing on alternative medicine, I can appreciate a book that is extremely well researched and written. Rogers has provided a remarkably comprehensive work on the chemical compounds, preparations, traditional uses, and research based (dare I say evidence based?) health promoting properties of numerous Pacific Northwest fungi.

A++ for this book!

This is an excellent book, especially if you enjoy technical reading. I live in the Sandpoint, Idaho area, and I have already identified over 29 species of fungi, most with some sort of healthful benefit.

A masive book on medicinals mushrooms... the most concentrate sources of info on the market... that book cover so much species... the adding of lichen is a great bonus... not an easy book... so much info it's sometimes confusing... a lot of raw result from many many studies... covert nearly everything on medicinals mushrooms from hardcore biology to the spiritual properties of mushrooms... the best sources of info for natives use of mushrooms and lichens... probably not a good choice for a first medicinal mushrooms books... but an absolute addition to the bookshelf of anybody interested in medicinals mushrooms... A few people complain about the binding... my copy was perfect...

I am so in love with this book. It has been invaluable to me. I really appreciate the inclusion of so many study results and findings. This text is deep, and rich with so much important information that I have recommended as an addition to the Herbalists Without Borders library.

The information on vitamin compounds in this book is better than any of the others I have. I also find the information about cancer fighting compounds extremely interesting

its not really a cut and dry kind of an explanation on using fungi as medicine, more a collection of studies and theories which some conclusions can be drawn from but i was hoping for a more direct look at fungi's usefulness for specific illnesses ailments and for remedies. but i still have a ways to go in this very long book so i may be in for a surprise
