Another great, great entry in the "Funk Drops" series. If you haven't heard these compilations of 60s & 70s soul jams, do it ASAP. They are all tremendous. This has a mix of fairly well known tracks by the likes of Curtis Mayfield, Dr. John, Aretha Franklin, King Curtis, and Betty Wright, along with lesser known classics by Baby Huey, The Meters, and the Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band (the one led by Charles Wright). And then there are a WHOLE LOT of amazing obscurities by a variety of acts, ranging from James Brown associate Bobby Byrd to the band Cold Blood doing a slammin' version of the Bill Withers song "Kissing My Love," and even a track from Sly Stone's real sister, the act dubbed Little Sister. It's the proverbial all killer and no filler. Some intensely good instrumentals merge perfectly with the menu of funky vocal tracks. Along with the CD you get a booklet with artist info and song details. All in all, a very well done package. Take these Funk Drops and there won't be any need to call the doctor in the morning!

Look, the music is great - but keep in mind, this is a Warner Brothers disc from early 2000s, and it has a well-documented incompatibility with many CD/DVD drives. Basically if you have an HP, Dell, or Lenovo laptop with a TSSTCorp disc drive, the sound on this disc will likely come out horribly garbled. You can read on in Microsoft support forums: [...]

This is not the fault of the seller. This appears to be an issue with a copy protection scheme that WB implemented at a time.

An esoteric collection of American Funk

For some reason it seems to be left to Europeans (and Brits in particular) to collect together "lost" soul and funk nuggets from the USA, and provide a coherent set of sleeve notes to place the said items within a context. This excellent collection as well as containing some of Warners biggest hits ("Clean Up Woman"/Betty Wright, "Rock Steady"/Aretha Franklin,"Right Place,Wrong Time"/Dr John) contains some neglected gems that ought to be heard.In particular "Stanga" by Little Sister is a belter, little sister being Rose Stewart part of Sly's extended band/family. There are two Family Stone covers, a magnificent version of "Everyday People" by Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band,and a version of "Sing a simple song" by The Noble Knights-led by King Curtis, but with all the Atlantic House band luminaries in attendance as well. Then there's a remake of a Watts Band backing track dubbed by Society's bag, 1 minute 25 seconds of a track called "Stroke 75" by Tower of Power and a stunning track called "Kissing my Love" by Cold Blood. There's no room to mention the Bobby Byrd track, or the one by Allan Toussaint, but I ought to give a big shout for "Somebody in the World for you" by The Mighty Hannibal which somehow managed not to get much airplay first time around. Sure, a lot of this stuff is obscure, but it's GOOD obscure, not just padding to the hits contained herein, and it rattles along in a joyful urgent way. Looking for something from left field that makes you feel good? Get those flares out!This could be worth investing in.

Amazing in every way. Hypnotic rhythms masterfully performed and produced to the highest standards of Atlantic house style. All digitally remastered from analogue tapes so expect full fat sound that bristles with fine detail without being compressed like much of modern rock. The sound of bass, so fundamental to funk, comes out deep and properly articulated. The material itself is of the highest order. I have other funk/soul compilations but none comes close to this in terms of sheer musicality. I don't care if the tracks are not the sufficently obscure in the opinions of some DJs (or maybe they are, I've no clue). The guys from Atlantic who compiled this disc knew what they were doing. This is my first of the 3 volumes available in this series and I'm definitely going to get the other two. A must.

Having purchased a lot of these Funk compilation albums I can say with authority that this is the greatest. Tracks 12-14 (King Curtis, Baby Huey, Curtis Mayfield) are three of the greatest funk tracks in the history of the genre. I urge both aficionados and newcomers to purchase this album and disseminate amongst the masses because music this good needs to be shared.
