Twana Burch is a lucky girl. Yeah, her brother is involved with a black-market cloning racketeer, and her mom is a junkie declining rapidly towards death. But Twana, who is the HUGEST FAN EVER of the mononymicpop star Bieber, happens to be present when the car carrying her musical idol explodes.
Now, I realize it might not seem like good luck to see your musical hero blasted into bits, but here's the key piece you're missing: Twana catches one of the bits. Specifically, she catches Bieber's Finger.
What results is a madcap plan: Twana makes a deal with herbrother's mobster boss that, in exchange for a chrome-plated rehab plan fortheir mom, Twana will hand over the finger and will also train the resultingBieber clone how to be Bieber: she knows all the key information, because, after all, she's his biggest fan. This will allow the mobster to spin Bieber'sdeath as a publicity stunt and return under new management, just in time to winthe Pan-Galactic Prom Show.
Intercut with the story of Twana's and New Bieber'sadventures, we also follow a platoon of ice beetles from planet Hull. Theirhome destroyed by their species enemy, the Voles, these elite beetles aretasked with finding a new home for the entire race. Resuscitating a wreckedearth-origin exploration ship, the USS Arlington, and head into deep space.
The adventure continues in Funk Toast and the Pan-Galactic Prom Show. The ice beetle explorers have become a band called Poison Nickels, and by a bitof aggressive management and some musical piracy, they get themselves on to theprogram. Along with the resurrected Bieber and the Funk Toast band (areal life band here transmogrified into a science fiction analog, complete withband member biographies and portraits baked into the narrative of both books),the Poison Nickels get a slot on the Pan-Galactic Prom Show.
Will the popstar-cloning scam work? Will Bieber's boybandmateand murderer finish the job he started? Will Poison Nickels succeed in usingthe Prom Show has a platform for bringing attention to the plight of theirspecies, and get a new home for the ice beetles? Will anybody find love?
Craig Nybo's previous books have been small-townmonster-injected Americana. Here, the Wizard of Kaysville takes his love ofgonzo storytelling, injects it with his rock and roll savoir faire, shoots itinto outer space, and amps the volume to 11.
Well worth it.

From the Author
Funk Toast and the Pan-galactic Prom Show picks up the story of Twana Burch, a superfan who clones her pop idol, teaches him to sing and dance and takes him to an off-world venue to play the ultimate gig. Her goal: revive Bieber's career and maybe experience a little teen romance along the way.
Funk Toast and the Pan-galactic Prom Show is not a Bieber biography book. The character named Bieber in this novel is referenced only by his last name. Although the character is an international pop idol, the Bieber dealt with in Funk Toast and the Pan-galactic Prom Show comes as clean slated clone with no memory of his stardom.
Funk Toast and the Pan-galactic Prom Show is my contribution to the growing pool of funny science fiction novels. I wrote Funk Toast and the Pan-galactic Prom Show in the spirit of Douglas Adams's Hitchhiker's Guide to the universe. I have been a long-time fan of funny science fiction characters such as Arthur Dent, Zaphod Beeblebrox, and, of course, Marvin the depressed robot. Why not Bieber?
With so many YA fiction books to read in the world, I felt that the young adult audience would like a good teenage romance book. Funk Toast and the Pan-galactic Prom Show is a funny romance book for young adults. Let's face it, there are so many YA fiction authors out there releasing status quo teen romance stories, I felt like the less-likely genres of cyberpunk and genetic engineering might be a perfect place to set a teenage romance comedy book.
The science behind Bieber's Finger comes from a place of comedy rather than hard science. There are human cloning books that explore in detail the wonders of genetic engineering. Nevertheless, Bieber's Finger, as a clean funny teen romance book that I believe can confidently take its place in human cloning books fiction.
