I purchased this in my ongoing quest to complete my Gene Harris collection. This is not my crown jewel of the collection, but it is a treasured album that has brought me a lot of pleasure. It's also unique in that I normally prefer Harris in a piano trio setting, but now that I have a number of his albums featuring him in a quartet I am rethinking my preferences.

One of the main reasons why I am drawn to this album is guitarist Ron Eschete. He is on a large number of my Harris albums, and here is and Gene seem to be so telepathically connected that they are the same person playing two instruments. Of course the rhythm section comprised of Luther Hughes on bass and Paul Humphery on drums makes this album special as well. Like Eschete, Hughes and Humphrey have a long history with Harris, and the tightness of the quartet on every track shows that.

Listen to the sound samples for a hint of the music on this album. It's definitely Harris' sound (although he has a penchant for quoting other pianists' riffs), and the interplay between him and Eschete is - alone - worth the price of the album.

If you are a Gene Harris fan this should be on your short list. If you are a Ron Eschete fan this album is (in my opinion) essential. At any rate, it's a great listen and a toe tapper.

How can you miss with this great jazz combination ~ Ron Eschete (guitar) ~ Luther Hughes (bass) ~ Paul Humphrey (drums) ~ and the man himself tickling the ivories, Mr. Gene Harris ~ make up THE GENE HARRIS QUARTET.
Featuring some old and some new ~ "BYE BYE BLUES", a classic tune from the early days ~ "BLUES IN HOSS' FLAT", big number from the Count Basie era ~ "NICE 'N' EASY", Alan & Marilyn Bergman song recorded so matter of fact by Frank Sinatra, with a new arrangement giving us another side to this jazz favorite by Gene and his associates ~ "CHILDREN OF SANCHEZ", composed for the film by Chuck Mangione and hand picked by Gene with this haunting and original arrangement for piano and guitar, takes on several tempo changes ~ "BLUES FOR BASIE" and "OLD FUNKY GENE'S", written by Harris gives the listener a wild ride, opening with soulful melodies, counter-balancing on through jazz, tip-toeing in gospel and closing with hard-pounding blues ~ what a ride that was...can we do it again?
Why not try other title on Concord Jazz featuring Gene Harris ~ "Alley Cats" (CCD-4859-2) ~ "Listen Here" (CCD-4385) ~ "It's The Real Soul" (CCD-4692) ~ "In His Hands" (CCD-4758-2).
Total Time: 57:25 on 9 Tracks...Concord Jazz CCD 4509...(1994)

I cannot believe I am the first to review this amazing jazz CD. Again Gene Harris is super. The opening tune "Willow Weep for Me" is handled sooooo well. Gene Harris is a super jazz piano man and has a terrific ensemble and I mean a group. They are solid. A nice spin with Nice 'N Easy will satisfy many. This is a fine album.

I have a lot of Gene Harris CD's but for some reason I missed this one, boy did I miss. This CD is a really funky piece of work by Gene and his crew, very bluesy and lots of gutts. Don't know why the tunes on this CD don't get more airplay, but they sure are good. It is a nice addition to other CD's like his London gigs. Adds one more dimension to this incredibly talented musician.
