The J.B.'s were James Brown's backing band, who performed and released names under numerous names, including Fred Wesley & The J.B.'s, Maceo & The Macks, and The Last Word. This set includes all nine of their chart hits and quite a few rare singles and long versions. Universal.

For those of us with good taste, this is the real deal; it ain't some boxer named hollyfield. Lots and I do mean LOTS of those samples we heard on 1980's hip hop appeared on these recordings first and, arguably, they were better the first time.
If you're still with me, then I'm gonna back on up and do my thing so I can let you know just why I'm here today writin' this here review. It's the quality of the sound my brother. You see, I been readin' all this internet jive 'bout how the cd is still where it's at cuz the digital download is missing some of that essential funky goodness due to that evil relative of king heroin better known to the world as Compression. Well, I saved me a few dollars when I made a decision to buy me this here compilation in a format derisively titled empeethree. Damn! This here sounds tastier than what the watermelon man be peddlin to the kiddies. No Lie. I got me some cd's of Jb and none of em sound better than this digital download right here. In fact, I been Doin It To Death with the version of that song that's on the star time box and it didn't sound as tight as this here empty three or whatever.
So word to the wise if you's gonna keep on bumpin into the next decade be prepared for the future shock of the dynamics 'o this here hempee three y'all. pass the peas pass the peas pass the peas pass the peas pass the peas pass the peas...
With 30 great-gosh-almighty-hit-me-one-more-time-again tracks to select from, you might imagine there are quite a few standouts, too many to mention them all. Blessed Blackness is especially nice, as are Dirty Harri, Parrty, Doing It To Death, and Pass The Peas. My personal favorite is I'm Payin' Taxes, What Am I Buyin' - almost 10 minutes of outstanding backbeat, tight horns, great singing - and that magic ingredient - it's okay what you say.
Funky good time: The Anthology (2 CD set)
This is an enjoyable set that has a few great cuts but there is just too much in it that sounds like they are keeping the groove going in anticipation for the song to begin...and it never does.
If you want to hear the original J.B.'s playing their best, you have to get James Brown's "Love Power Peace: Live at the Olympia, Paris, 1971" CD.
Funky good time: Anthology is an adequate but unspectacular overview of the J.B.'s. As such, it gets a Four Star rating.
