Editorial Reviews

One cold, wet night three lost teens - Skip, April and Augie plus Elmo their dog - stumbled inside a spooky old house hoping to get warm. The dusty clock showed the wrong time, so these helpful kids reset the clock hands. A gong rang out, followed by a voice: It's the Spirit of 1776, even, at your service! Much to their surprise was the friendly ghost Mudsy (voiced by legendary actor Daws Butler) and his mischievous ghost cat Boo. Antics abound when this motley group hits the road, cracking cases and thwarting crooks, pirates, ghosts and all kinds of strange characters in this rib-tickling animated Hanna-Barbera series. It's no mystery that Mudsy, Boo and the gang are fun for everyone in this 4-Disc, 17-Episode Funky Phantom Complete Series Collection!

In the early 70's there was a big colonial revival in anticipation of the bicentennial and the "Funky Phantom" fed right into this. Following the surprising success of "Scooby Doo" where `meddling kids' and their strange side kick solve crimes Hannah-Barbera created several more Saturday morning cartoon series over the years with a similar theme. One of the more memorable was "The Funky Phantom" where 3 teens and their dog encounter a ghost from the days of the American Revolution and proceed to drive around the countryside solving mysteries that usually revolve around a monster or ghost later revealed to be someone in a mask usually undone when coming up against a real ghost.

Part of the problem with FP is that while on Scooby Doo all of the characters contribute to the `entertainment on Funky Phantom most of the humor comes from the ghost, either his antics or malapropisms "Heavens to Betsey Ross!" or mangled history "This is like when I crossed the Potomac with Washington"
"He crossed the Delaware"
"Were you there? `Cause I sure was!"

The mysteries are no where near as well written as in Scooby Doo (why anyone would be afraid of the `chicken man' is beyond me) and there is an odd tension between the 3 kids of PF as the two guys, voiced well by Mickey Dolenz both try to win the girl's affections and this patter tends to throw off the team feeling compared to SD where the 4 kids just seem friends. Lastly the level of animation is noticeably less than that of Scooby Doo as the HB workshops moved up to producing many more mystery shows for the Saturday morning grind.

Overall Funky Phantom is a wonderful reminder of a much simpler time, 1971, when children's cartoons were not just shilling for toy sales.

The memories I have of Saturday mornings in the 1970s is full of many memories of dozens of cartoons.there were those I watched and the ones I never got to see because they conflicted with my favorites. This show must have conflicted with Scooby Doo or something because I didn't get to see it to often.
I started watching the set and boy, what flashbacks. This is one of those funny, spooky shows that came along after Scooby's
Success early in the new decade. I've been trying to fill the gaps in memory with purchases of shows from that era and this one fits the bill nicely. From its opening theme I was transported to Saturday AM circa 1971. Not a bad place to be.

This was one of my favourite cartoons when I was a little girl, and it is great to see it on DVD, particularly as Boomerang on Foxtel appears to have lost the plot with what constitutes as classic cartoons. and no longer screens series such as this. Amazon is one of the few places where I can purchase these cartoons, which strangely are unavailable in Australia's retail stores. A big thank you!

Never really watched all the episodes when they first came out in the 70's. Maybe it was opposite of another show or even then I knew it was a Scooby-Doo theme show. But recently I've been enjoying some of my other Hanna-Barbera DVDs. Plus Mickey Dolenz does one of the voices of Skip so being a Monkees fan why not get it. So yes loosely based off of Scooby-Doo these ghost searching characters including a ghost Mudsy's and his cat Boo. The only problem I have is that the two guys Skip and Augie trying to get the affection of April is ok but I find Augie at times being too mean towards Skip. This also resembles the same theme of Elmo the dog being pranked by Boo but I don't find it as mean as Augie. As for the ghost Jonathan Wellington "Mudsy" Muddlemore is very similar to Snugglepuss is voiced by Daws Butler who does many voices for Hanna-Barbera.
If you enjoy a B-rated Scooby-Doo you will enjoy these episodes. I know I did.

Like the show but no effort put into presentation. I enjoy the show and along with speed buggy it's one of my favorite Scooby doo knock offs. However Warner seemed to put very little effort into making this DVD. From looking at the main menu u can't even tell what show ur watching it simply says Warner archive collection and has play and episode buttons at the bottom. The side of the DVD simply has bold white letters and the front is an odd green and purple mix. I certainly enjoy watching the shows but wish Warner bros could've put in a few hours more effort into making it.

I love these older cartoons and even though the Funky Phantom seemed like a cross between Scooby-Doo and Speed Buggy, it was still a good cartoon. it's too bad they didn't make more. The quality was excellent and was in great Condition. I really enjoyed watching this cartoon again!

The Funky Phantom is a cartoon in the vein of Scooby-Doo and Jabberjaw.
If you are just starting to collect classic cartoons, wait on this series, unless you are a fan of Micky Dolenz (The Monkees) or love Colonial history. Start first with Scooby-Doo: Where Are You? and Jonny Quest.
This is the but... I had purchased two DVD-R releases without problems before I purchased this one. There were problems with 5 episodes on this DVD-R. You couldn't get through an episode without it freezing. This summer I upgraded my ancient DVD player for a 3-D Blu-ray Disc player. This took care of the problems on 4 of the 5 episodes.
