I love the look and feel to these boots, but had a bit of trouble with the fit around my calf. I normally wear size 8 shoes, so I ordered a small. Unfortunately, the calf circumference of the boot is exactly 18" which is the same circumference of my own calf. The shoe itself fit perfectly, but I'm short and fat and I've got small-ish feet. I loved the design too much to return them, however, especially with no other options that fit my weird size.
So, I tried my hand at altering boots for the first time in my life. I was desperate to have a pair of boots that I could use for both a pirate costume for a ren faire, a vampire costume at a convention, and a Kylo Ren costume for a Halloween party. I bought some black, slightly-stretchy fabric, cut a slit down the back of the calves with a pair of expensive kitchen scissors (Cutco brand if anyone's curious), and then sewed a triangular gusset to make room in each boot. I'm already decent at hand-sewing, so it wasn't too hard to do -- just a little more complex than the average hem. I found a few different tutorials about how to sew a gusset into a boot (Also, learned the word "gusset"!). It doesn't exactly look professional level, but I sure as hell didn't want to go through the trouble of finding and paying someone to do boot alterations. But it did the trick, and it's black so nobody can really tell that I altered them unless they make a point of scrutinizing my calves for some reason. Also, I was easily able to wear stretchy black faux leather pants and tucked them into the boot, after I'd made the alterations. The new circumference is about 21"-22"?
Anyway, I wore them for a ren faire for about 8 or 9 hours, which includes the drive to the faire grounds and then walking around all day watching jousting and drinking mead and looking at fine wares. I preemptively took a couple of ibuprofen, so I didn't feel like amputating my legs at the end of the day, but I did sort of start to lose feeling in my ankles by the time we got in the car to drive home (at which point, obviously, I took them off). But suffice to say, these boots are amazing, especially after all the walking I did!
there more like a 13.5 standard width. the top of the boot is larger than i expected- i have a 21" calf and i was able to zipper them,. there tight but they did zip all the way up. a 18-19" calf would have enough room to tuck in pants.
they look sweet, the soles are thin but good enough for a cosplay or costume. the lug sole is deeper than i expected as well.
not returning yet, going to try a morning fit and see if thee is any stretch to the boot, if so they may serve. will folow up then
