The really sad part is that there is a lot of promise in the characters and the setting and story line.
between the cats and the humans is awesome. This one even
more so. Treacle is just the greatest cat and I like the other 2, also.
I love this witch/ familiar thing as I'm a total cat person. Can't wait
for the next book in the series and hope it's not too far in the future!
I knocked off 2 stars because, first of all, the book just wasn't different enough from other "witch-themed" cozies to give it 5 stars. And, while it had some clever turns of phrases, it wasn't laugh-out-loud funny.
Secondly, I realize these are fictional witches, but being a witch isn't a matter of being a "creature with powers", like a werewolf or other mythical things - there are real witches in this world, with real belief systems. And in none of our somewhat diverse belief systems is there a "Great Creator". We are polytheists, not monotheists. We also do not say "there's a reason for the season", as we are not Christians ("Christian witch" is not a real thing, despite a few confused folks who think it is).
Finally, a spell in Irish (not "Celtic") that translates to "go out, go for a walk" is ridiculous (used for destroying a monster, really?). Why bother looking up Irish words if you're not going to come up with anything approaching appropriate?
Cute book in some ways - I liked the cats - and I've read other books by this author (and liked them), but I won't be reading others in this series. Kind of disappointing. Cannot recommend.
