Furby is programmed to be nice, be fresh, and to be mean/evil. Interesting. But like I said when he turns fresh or mean my son puts him in the closet. Which means less use of the toy. Sometimes it's entertaining, sometimes not so much. You can't really make Furby into one personality- at least that is our observation.
The new version of Furby blows the old out of the water. Many more sensors, and my kids LOVE the ability to interact using the iPad/iPhone... especially feeding them and translating
The battery life is RIDICULOUS. I purchased six Furbies, requiring four batteries each. That is 24 batteries on Christmas morning JUST for the Furbies. I purchased very high end rechargables, figuring in the long run it would be well worth it. Um.... yes and no. A full charge only lasts ONE day on average (sometimes you can get two if you do NOTHING with the Furby). I even tried a round of non-rechargables, thinking maybe they aren't as strong or something. Nope. Still only lasts a day. That is obscene. Who can afford to run a toy that requires FOUR NEW AA batteries every day? Yes, I have the rechargables, but I still find it ridiculous.
Secondly, a couple of mine have not worked great, especially after battery changes (which as I said happens DAILY). They then need fiddled with and reset repeatedly. No fun for anyone.
Overall, I have to say for the kids these are 5 star products, but as an adult... not so much.
We bought this for our 4 year old, it's made fine, does all sorts of odd little things, learns words here and there from him, acts rude at times (which said 4 year old finds funny as heck) and has survived at least a month of "love" so the toy it'self is a relative hit.
Now for the folks that have to actually fork over $ for the thing:
It's annoying as all get out, there is no off switch (I googled it) it chatters and wiggles and and and. If you leave it alone in the corner by itself for 5-10 minutes it WILL go to sleep but touch it and it's obnoxious. We found on a road trip recently that the motion of a car NEVER allows it to shut off, I had to pull off the highway and put him in the trunk. He was dead by the time we got our 6 hours away. I wizened up and took a battery out before the return trip home.
It's a fine toy, your child will love it, you will not.
